The sad thing about the large security fence and barbed wire (upon several versions of which EH has spent many thousands of taxpayer's pounds in the past few years) is they have probably prevented absolutely zero incursions onto the hill ever. Or perhaps an octogenarian or two with gammy legs. Better/more sineage would have been far more successful, not to mention a bit of imaginative high tech security stuff etc etc.

Interesting letter by Peter Fowler in the Guardian this morning ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2010/aug/05/world-heritage-sites-uk-withdraw )which finishes with -

In any case world heritage is actually about sound management of sites, and our means currently fail our responsibilities in some respects with some of our existing gems. Think Stonehenge, for example.
