I've always felt Tommy was a great "composition", but a disappointing "album."
Other than Keith's stupendous drumming, it falls flat as a Who record. Wimpy guitars and not enough bottom end. Record label wouldn't pay for the orchestrations Pete wanted, so all you get is Entwistle's lonely french horn! Which sounds sort of ridiculous compared to the baroque psychedelic too-muchness of the time. (Not understated, just cheap!)
The live versions tend to be better. (I also enjoyed the Ken Russell film!)
