Note I said "relative good guy"... Assad is certainly a dictator, but then, so are all the Arab leaders in the Middle East. And torture is part and parcel for the region. Here's the rosy status of a few of our allies:

Assad's no worse a tyrant than any other tyrant in the region. And Syria, prior to 2011, was a stable, secular, relatively prosperous regime with considerable rights for women. The original 2011 protestors no doubt had legitimate grievances, but their movement was soon hijacked by foreign-funded Wahabi crazies who wanted to turn Syria into a caliphate. Once the crazies took over, it became pretty clear who the good guys were.
