The first tidal power station was set up on Islay many years ago. Late 1970's I think.
The Islay tidal array is in production. The turbines are being built in Scotland.

These tidal turbines will turn on a very regular basis (ie. with the tides!). The tidal surge around the Sound of Islay (and around Orkney where the Atlantic meets the North Sea) is a massive, very predictable energy source. Storage of the power generated is the key.
