Why? It'll just get continued in a new thread, so thread-fascism isn't particularly helpful.

Then do just that. Hi-jacking threads isn't helpful either but the continual repetitive diatribe which is resolving nothing is very wearing and no way to attract new members to this forum which has suffered enough already.

I agree, but I don't see how the arbitrary closing of threads is really going to help. The only solution is proactive moderation, which is sadly lacking.
