Shame, because people do respond to figures - especially if they have a few zeros behind them! I think the acknowlegement of a magazine with 14000 circulation is a start, and some"ball park" figure of unreported finds would be possible, even if it were a matter of best & worst case scenarios - Juamei's calc's make me shudder (and I know it goes on!).....

Of course, I know that its probable that the majority of these finds are tiny bits of metal - single coins etc - but not recording them (or their context) makes me go all Neanderthal in frustration.
