I would suggest most people interested in ancient sites have at some point or another picked up artifacts and took them home. I suggest for most on this board that's a thing of the past, but that's only because we have learnt that this is not a good idea - I would suggest that of those that visit ancient sites only a small portion are aware of PAS, of who artefacts belong to and of the damage they potentially cause.

Here's some hypotheticals - I reckon we are talking between 2 and 4m people visit historic sites, probably at an average of around 2-3 sites per year. Of those, maybe one in ten will find somethnig that they find of interest and take it home.

I think these figures are very conservative - for example in North Yorkshire alone the number of hertiage tourists is reckoned to be 10m a year.
