Beats me why people feel the need to read mysterious happenings into the construction of megaliths. Just standing inside Avebury or Brodgar or looking at Silbury Hill or even at one of the lesser known stone circles as I did at Rempstone last year, I find it quite overwhelming that people could feel such a driving force that they had to get together and quarry, dress and erect these stones. The time and energy involved, when more mundane survival tasks were beckoning, and just what drove them is beyond our modern comprehension and inspires great feelings of admiration, respect and puzzlement in me. Why do we need to consider flying saucers/dragons/time travellers?
