Littlestone,
Not too sure myself what to make of Avebury, but I was just thinking about the nearby Windmill Hill. Could it be that that was the place of getting Neolithically bladdered, and Avebury was the place of "ritual", used in the broadest sense. It's just that there's evidence of a crackin' night out at Windmill Hill, but not yet at Avebury (that's not to say evidence won't turn up).
