Genre bugaboo - what is "rock"?
Jul 11, 2004, 17:19
And Scott Walker's music has very little to do with "rock n roll" either . . . . Jacques Brel ain't a rocker, sorry.

I've always felt there's 2 definition of "rocknroll":

The SPECIFIC definition, which means boogie-woogie r&b music derived directly from the 50's pioneers (Berry, Holly, Presley, Perkins, Penniman, et al.) So the Beatles & Stones are clearly "rocknroll" because they followed in the immediate footsteps of the originals (covered their songs, etc.) -- but by the time you get to stuff like Faust and ELP (let alone Scott Walker or KRS-ONE or Ornette Coleman or King Tubby) I think you've wandered OUT of "rocknroll, narrowly defined" and into some other genre (like prog, easy listening, hiphop or jazz.)

On the other hand the BROAD definition of rocknroll is basically a synonym for "contemporary popular music" -- it includes all those subgenres like prog, hiphop, reggae, disco, etc. Though it wouldn't include most jazz, classical, etc. as that's not really "popular" music (at least in the "contemporary" time period.)

Vis-a-vis "Unsung" I always thought we were using the broadest definition. Though there's some jazz & classical records reviewed as well. Do those need to be deleted now too? I hope not.

Nothing more useless than getting hung up on ill-defined genre boundaries . . . no one listens to genres anyway (which are nothing but labels and categories) . . . people listen to MUSIC . . . .

Re: Hot Poop to go!

It only goes to show what a cool muthafucka Hendrix was. Emerson's work is so different from his, yet they've been compared on more than one occasion (just coz both showboaters with lotsa technique.)

But can you imagine the ego clashes? Keith and Jimi on stage trying to out-showboat each other? The volume wars as they keep cranking their amps ever higher to be heard over the other guy . . .

But if had kept Greg Lake from singing, it might have been worth it.

As gorsedd... mentioned the NME I assumed he was from the uk. in which case, i find it hard to imagine how someone who likes music has never heard Suede. They were one of the biggest groups here in the early to mid-90's.

I think there is a danger of the Unsung section becoming a bit too proscriptive. I mean, I have a problem with the idea that the Unsung reviews section is "for CHAMPIONING lost Rock'n'roll." It's not so much the 'championing' part I have an issue with, but the 'rock'n'roll' part, mainly because most of the reviews I post are not of rock records. Not because I don't like rock, I love it, I just think it's covered very well by other reviewers. But emphasising the term Rock'n'roll could put others off posting reviews of albums which couldn't really be classed as rock as such, but are likely to appeal to rock-attuned ears. I thought my reviews of albums by Stockhausen, Nurse With Wound, Throbbing Gristle, Rhys Chatham and even a sound effects record might be well at home rubbing shoulders with the other reviews although they couldn't be called Rock'n'roll as such. There is a danger of restricting the remit too much, I think.

Oh and Shrimp, I have to say please cut the Holy-er than thou attitude. When I posted this review...

you weren't above posting up some negativity in the reviews section in response, when surely the place would have been this forum?...

> ridiculous judgemental higher-than-thou attitude

What? Cos I've heard Suede? Don't make me laugh. If you live in the UK - which I assumed from your mention of the NME - I found it hard to imagine not having heard of them. If you don't live in the UK then that's a different story.

But when you come up with sentences like the above, and calling people ridiculous and childish then I think I might not be the only with a so-called higher-than-thou attitude.

You disagree with me for thinking that some folk gain pleasure from liking obscure music. So be it.

They did one single that was OK -- something like Ziggy Stardust meets T-Rex and it was about amyl nitrate or something. The other stuff I heard wasn't so hot IMO.

Well I heard of them and heard their music, although I don't have their records. I heard a promo flexi that came w/ an issue of NME but I probably threw it out...

no i stand by that post - all it was was a suggestion from judge jules and not me that tanz is not wonderful and pales in comparison to other duul output - it did not diss at all what u said

i am not against peeps enthusing about something to be wary of as an unsung posting as long as that posting is passionate and is included hopefully within a passionate championing of some other output of the artist in question - jules is great at this and also seth

what i am against is unsung just becoming an area to review an album leaving out the passionate championing and wreckmyheaven has summed that up pretty well

the review should make me you and everyone else also want to go try it for size and then we can discuss our findings as unsung discussion threads if we then so wish - this happens rarely for me but greater for others

we all fail at times and i have and always will do however as a general rule i consider that all hh contributors should stand back and think before they post anything as to is this the best place to post or not

why do any of us want to post in the first place - there are numerous reasons for that however we all know that music is subjective and we aint all gonna agree at all times

I'll second Dog - and say 'amen'. Man, some of your reviews have been eye openers (especially the PTV one) - I've just put Yeti on the turntable to reappraise it after looking at that Duul review.

"Intoxication kiss" - man, I've just realised that I actually love this album!
