Ah, Italian prog. When I embarked on my grand musical tour a few years ago, it was Italy that surprised me the most with the breadth and quality of stuff that had been produced in the 70s. Why were PFM the only band that anybody knew in the pre-internet age, when there we delights such as Il Balletto di Bronzo's Ys out there?? (it's alright, I know, ELP had something to do with it...)
A few I'd add to this list:
Il Balletto di Bronzo's first album Sirio 2222. I know Italian prog might be a bit of a niche area in itself, but why is this always overlooked in favour of Ys? It's totally rocking. OK, it doesn't sound much like Ys, but its primitive but effective mash-up of glam, blues rock and psychey prog absolutely does it for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpL64feI820&feature=related
The one and only album by Il Teoremi, angular, bluesy, proto-math rock http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guF4rj02Fd0&feature=related
New Trolls - Searching for a Land. I know they apparently went on to haunt the Italo music scene like a bad smell, but this contains some smart, soulful, prog-inflected rock. Oh, and a lot of crowd noise on the live tracks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2xVz75qs98&feature=related
