It's a slippery one, in terms of balancing personal freedoms and societal freedoms... I know this example would rarely occur to us as westerners, but what if there are women who prefer to don the thing? Does the general public's abhorrence for a custom give it a right to ban it, if that custom does no material harm to anyone?
One could argue that high heels are degrading to women and ban them, as they are another way in which women are compelled to treat their bodies for the satisfaction of men...
And what if a man wanted to wear one? Is the burka banned just for Muslims, or has it become universally forbidden in any context?
