I have to admit, I find the sight of a woman wearing one of these rather unsettling. I struggle to understand it as 'her choice'. I think it's 'all wrong'. I don't understand why anyone would want to walk around not freely feeing the sun/ a cooling breeze on their face for one. I dress rather modestly, I've never went for 'tarty', yet often that's the riposte. But do I think 'a ban' is the right response? Probably not. Because surely, if it is a matter of cultural pressure, or worse, then it means the woman will see even less of the light of day. So this other clause, suggesting 'blokes' will be penalised for forcing their spouse/daughter to dress this way, will never, ever be pursued, if need be. So to me, as much as the reactionary in me would answer 'no' to the whole face veil shebang, this 'fix all' decision threatens to leave many women in an even darker place than before. x

as I was just about to start a thread on this;) The BBC has a rather interesting illustration at the bottom or this page:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-13031397 Frankly I was unaware of the variety and must admit I actually don't find the Shayla that offensive although Burka is hideous. I am not entirely sure how you disincline women to wear such a contraption. Certainly govt legislation will only make it symbol of rebellion in the minds of some. Its almost like you want to make it a thing of comedy that to even contemplate weating a Burka would make you an instant laughing stock

It's a slippery one, in terms of balancing personal freedoms and societal freedoms... I know this example would rarely occur to us as westerners, but what if there are women who prefer to don the thing? Does the general public's abhorrence for a custom give it a right to ban it, if that custom does no material harm to anyone? One could argue that high heels are degrading to women and ban them, as they are another way in which women are compelled to treat their bodies for the satisfaction of men... And what if a man wanted to wear one? Is the burka banned just for Muslims, or has it become universally forbidden in any context?

Realisitically, hasn't it most likely been brought in to satisfy the far-right in France, which is significant and growing. Lets hope Le Pen's daughter doesn't convince any more people than are already to the islamophobic attitudes that spawned this law

I liked the little observation the Iranian/Brit comedian Omid Djalili (yes, I had to do a spell check!) made about 'enforcing' such a law. You see a woman wearing one, you go up and tell a copper, she runs off, then the copper asks for a description... ;-) x

There has always been a small Sikh community here, many of the women dressing in the tradition, which left lots of us in awe as young girls, seeing as the clothing was vibrant, glittering, but in a way that seemed to 'accent' beauty, with no 'face covering' at all. The whole severity of the block black and just eyes as reminders there's a human in there does leave me uneasy, and it's eff all to do with 'race'. I would hope that no woman would wear that (the whole face covering) out of 'choice', given the horrible treatment meted out in some parts of the world. Just as a small matter of solidarity, perhaps. x

Daily Mail poll shows the vast majority against the ban spreading to the UK, and that's the Daily Mail! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/polls/index.html

"Should we have a burka ban like France?" Can you see the dilemma that question creates for Daily Mail readers?
