It is a different model of property ownership. You pay rent, and the 'landlord' is a legally separate body, comprised of everyone who lives in property owned by the co-op.

Many co-ops are a bunch of different kinds of properties. It is common for co-ops to have properties that are flats for single people or houses for families.

It is not about living with strangers; shared houses have interview processes and probation periods. Unshared houses are unshared.
