Problem is the word Goff! Unless Avebury is given the attention that Stonehenge is granted then we will just keep on speculating as to what it is/could have been for ever more. What we see is possibly only part of an even more intriguing layout that if exposed may give us a greater understanding of what it is all about instead of all asunder having to, well, speculate!! What we need, I feel, is a ‘Riverside Project’ at Avebury with the specific task of finding out what still lies hidden. Much of what was found there was not known about but they dug nevertheless and hey presto ‘look what we’ve found’. Here we are nearly into 2011 and we have even allowed Faulkner’s circle to disappear without it ever being seriously looked at and we already knew about it!! If it had been within spitting distance of Stonehenge it would have been turned inside out and upside down by now.
