You misunderstand me. I was trying to suggest that any speculation about the "beliefs" of people that didn't write things down and the existence of timber structures that aren't there slips the bounds of evidence and acquires the same status as a fictional account - without the power to persuade or even proclaim itself as "likely". Dead people and invisible wood are neutral witnesses. We need evidence-based speculation.
