I think we've all realised years ago that nothing in this country is sacred anymore once government gets its grubby hands on it. This is quite appalling if the story is accurate and true. Even if the land was sold off with a condition that no building or golf courses etc were allowed to be built over it, it is still being lost to us as a place of serenity and beauty once in private hands. As you rightly say, deplorable.

When we let in the conservatives this was bound to happen, their morals are those of an alley cat and they'd sell their mothers for a quick buck! But we also have large semi-bureaucratic bodies ready to protect the land, RSPB, National Trust, even dare I say it EH, maybe Natural England unless it gets culled. They got beaten over the poll tax, its up to us the public to stand in their way and call the greedy ******** to account. It will happen Sea Cat we just need people to stand behind the unions and take to the woods to protect the trees...

edit; Though having said that, read the following in the Telegraph,
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/countryside/8082756/Ministers-plan-huge-sell-off-of-Britains-forests.html

RSPB says "We would be quite relaxed about the idea of some sales, but would be unrelaxed if the wrong bits were up for sale like the New Forest, Forest of Dean or Sherwood Forest, which are incredibly valuable for wildlife and shouldn't be sold off.

"We would look very carefully at what was planned. It would be possible to sell 50 per cent if it was done in the right way."

National Trust!

"We will take a fairly pragmatic approach and look at each sale on a case by case basis, making sure the land goes to the appropriate organisations for the right sites, making sure the public can continue to enjoy the land."

You can't trust anyone nowadays....

Thanks. For you and everyone else!

Everyday I dread what I'm going to read next. I know some folk think I'm naive hoping and praying for serious protest and direct action, but I honestly think it's the only chance we've got. Apologies to the Editors and MA contributors for introducing a political slant, but I just think it's effecting everything decent, our social morality, and now our landscape and heritage is under the greatest attack since The General Inclosure Act.

Well, both the Tory party and the National Trust are stuffed full of the landowners that stand to gain billions of pounds from this. "Case by case basis" means "fill your boots chaps"

Moss is right about the Conservatives. Each half generation forgets what they are actually about, maximising the advantage of those in charge of them (and kidding the rest of their supporters they represent THEM as well.) A new generation is about to learn the hard way.

no suprise that it's now our ancient heritage that will be cynically and selfishly traded to fill their coffers.

Well, no more barn conversions to sell off (Maggie's gift remember. £200K windfalls, gratis, to those who didn't need it - and in sharp contrast to her other property-related move - the right to buy your council house if you paid for it!) so I guess the lasndowners are overdue for a handout.

I can actually prove it's corrupt favouritism:
Logically, planning permission on woodland or a barn represents a lump of value entirely created by us, the community, with the stroke of a pen. No-one earned it or deserves it, so logically it should be subject to a 100% Development Tax, yes? So why isn't that being proposed?

Absolutely Nigel. I couldn't agree more. I remember last time around only too well. The Tories never give, but always take away, and no suprise that it's now our ancient heritage that will be cynically and selfishly traded to fill their coffers. If you take away someone's heritage, you take away their spirit and independence. Ancient living woodland that has witnessed and withstood so much change cannot withstand this if they get their way.
Shameful and an outrage.
