Long Man of Wilmington - URGENT HELP NEEDED
Jul 01, 2007, 13:28
I am post this for Cursuswalker.

ITV are recording an episode of Trinny and Susanna at Wilmington. They are planning on changinging the look of the Long Man by having people lie next to it. In doing so they are damaging the hillside. At the moment they have approx 80 people walking all over the hillside. With the current weather conditions the hillside is being damaged. ITV will be doing the actual recording of the show tomorrow (Monday 1st July). If there are people out there who can come to Sussex and show their support for the Long man and object to the damage that ITV are causing to the hillside please come.

I am sure Cursuswalker will be posting here later tonight

Apologies to all, that was a stupid knee jerk reaction to something that makes me very upset.

Most on here are just too far away but hopefyully keeping this near the top will bring it to the attention of some who can join CW.

Perhaps a call to the BBC news telling them why we object to people messing about with hill figures? If they turned up to cover a protest I wonder if ITV would go ahead.

Thinking on my feet here, never a good ploy!

PRESS RELEASE
Protest, 2nd July 2007

Trinny and Susannah’s desecration of a Sacred Site

Venue:
Long Man of Wilmington, near to Eastbourne, East Sussex

Event:
Protest by the Pagan Community against Trinny and Susannah’s desecration of a sacred site.

Tomorrow morning, 2nd July 2007, at the site of the ancient hill figure of The Long Man of Wilmington, Trinny and Susannah plan to dishonour and thereby desecrate an ancient Pagan site of worship.

Having just heard of this proposed desecration, it is our (the Pagan Community’s) intention to protest and, where possible, disrupt.

We, the Pagans, would not in our wildest dreams consider putting female breasts and clothing on effigies of any of the Holy Prophets, be it Jesus Christ, Buddha or any other revered figure of another faith.

Why then does ITV commission Trinny and Susannah to do so at the Long Man of Wilmington? Bad enough that the Victorians removed the Cerne Abbas Giant’s member – this is supposed to be the Age of Enlightenment, multiculturalism and religious tolerance.

The Sussex Archaeological Trust has erected signs at the site and on their website (http://www.sussexpast.co.uk/property/site.php?site_id=13), asking people not to walk on the figure, or on the surrounding vegetation. We believe that damage is being caused to the site and view this as nothing short of vandalism and will be staging a protest throughout the day against the commercial exploitation of this country’s archaeological and spiritual heritage.

Yes, funnily enough that was what all the women were saying as they came off the figure. TV says it's okay so it must be, in other words.

Remember when the Notional Trust gave permission for the Big Brother logo to be painted nest to the Uffington White horse? This, by any reasonable measure, is worse. Far worse.

Sussex Archaeological Society gave permission, but it seems that the terms of that opinion may have been breached.

In any case they have blatantly failed in their duty of care towards the site.

There is still time to get SAS to reverse this ridiculous decision. Their contact details are here: http://www.sussexpast.co.uk/contact/

I was at the Long Man today.

The sheer ignorance displayed by those taking part (80 of them) was breathtaking. They have been told, it seems, that the site is just made of concrete blocks and that they have permission, so that’s okay. After all if the mighty TV says it’s alright then it must be yes? One of the crew actually said to me “It’s good television though isn’t it?”

The Sussex Archaeological Society have given permission for this fiasco, seemingly having been told that they will not be going on the figure itself. My pictures tell another story.

There is still time to get this decision reversed for the actual filming tomorrow. PLEASE get down there if you can for 10 o’clock. Bring something noisy and a kite (Not to get in the way of the camera shots from down the hill you understand, just for relaxation).

This is a special site for Pagans. It is also a very sensitive archaeological site. What they are doing sets an awful example to everyone who is not aware of the nature of this site. Giving permission is an appalling misjudgement on the part of the owners and for the moment the Pagan community are the true custodians of the site.
