Don't get all defensive. You've riled folks up. They're cross because they care about these old stones, as I'm sure you do, else why the heck are you going to all this bother to record them.

The Siniai pic isn't a chalked motif, it's cut into the patina, hence the lighter colouring, the other pic doesn't show anything that looks like marking with chalk.

The fact that you've gone to the bother of trying to wash chalk off shows you have some respect for the next person to come along and view one of these stones, but doesn't that just end up adding a bit of abraision to the process?

There's nowt that makes chalk especially crucial is there? Surely with a bit of thought, you can get the results you're after without even the slightest possibility of damaging these old stones. Then we can all share in your discoveries as you bung them up on tma, and all will be well.

Hope so, 'cos it looks like you're taking a lot of flak, and may well go in the huff. Hope not.
