I was working down there for most of last summer, although due to busyness didn't see too much stuff. Rodez is indeed cheap to fly too and while you're there you have to go the the Chams des Bondons; a huge moor/downland area, between Florac and Mende, scattered with hundreds of menhirs, mainly sighted on a 'sleeping beauty' type range of three hills that rise above the down.
Two of these hills are known locally as 'the tits of the devil' and many of the local place names relate to 'the bad old woman'.
Do a google for a guy called bruno marc, there's tonnes of stuff on his site.
The Ardeche (where I also was) has like, 500 dolmens or something but, to be honest, many are ruined and nearly all of them are exactly the same. Still cool to see a few though...
