Avebury Bypass
May 27, 2004, 00:13
It hardly needs saying but traffic through Avebury is reaching catastrophic proportions - especially during the rush hour when the noise is deafening and you take your life in your hands just trying to cross from one side of the circle to the other.

If the sheer volume of traffic wasn't bad enough the mega-trucks now going through is REALLY scary! Got a feeling that problems with the Cove were caused by vibration from heavy vehicles and I wonder how long it's going to be before one of those big suckers takes out the Diamond Stone. This isn't about speed restrictions through Avebury or pedestrian crossings (non-existent at present) it's about safety, conservation and restoring a degree of tranquillty at a World Heritage/Sacred Site.

There've been suggestions for an Avebury Bypass before but maybe now is the time to re-kindle the idea before it's to late.

The bypass is not going to happen in our lifetime.
As to the traffic disturbing the Cove , I don't think so.
The reason the tall stone started to lean was that the packing stones on the outside were removed when the cottage was built. It was stable until the cottage was destroyed and the foundations removed.

... although, having said that, I've seen instances of houses destabilised through heavy lorry vibration, so it's something that should be kept in mind. Maybe some sort of restriction on lorries?

Littlestone, yes , good idea. How about posting up a map showing your proposed route for a bypass? ;)

Or maybe it needs a tunnel?!

There are only 2 possible bypass routes, both start at Berwick Bassett. One aims to join up with the A4 at the sanctuary the other goes behind Windmill hill passed Julians house and joins the A4 on the Calne road.
Neither of these will ever happen because of the huge amount of archaeology they would destroy.
Traffic damaging the stones, Na.
I've seen cars hit the Swindon stone at 60 miles and harldy even scratch the stone but totaled the car.

Assumming nobody was seriously injured, do you have any photos? That would be a first for TMA.

I do have photos somewhere but they are in a huge box of CD's that I don't have time to go through today.
I have lots of photos of cars that have hit the bank or left the road and skidded towards the devils chair.
Since I've lived here (6 years now) I have known of at least 4 deaths due to speeding cars on the corners at Avebury. 2 years ago I saw 4 bodies lying in the road near Silbury late one night and I've lost count of the number of bikers who have died around here on biker night.
Last year a car came around the corner by the Red Lion on 2 wheels and missed me by inches.

Nah, sod the tunnel (not literally - that would be hideous!). How about a flyover? That'd have the added advantage of some spectacular aerial views of the stones, which'd be a real boon for us amateur photographers!

He he, I can just see it now! Cars plummeting off the flyover as the driver yells "just one more photo!"
:)
