Although the Synod of Whitby more or less marked the end of Celtic christianity many parts of Britain, , the tradition survived not only in Scotland but also in Cornwall, Devon and Wales.
What I find fascinating about the Scottish church, especially on the east coast was the survival of the Culdees who, depending on who you read, may have been the keepers of the pre-christian tradition in these islands. Margaret's influence brought the Culdee tradition to an end. Margaret's brother , Edgar Atheling, was King Elect in England.
Malcolm was a very bad man and declared himself the conquerors man, he and William turned the north of England into a "slaughter house" (not the first or last time for Malcolm). Between them they destroyed any resistance to the Normans. Simeon of Durham remarked that "there was scarcely a Scottish household without an English slave thereafter".
