When people are born their sight is rather fuzzy - the first shapes to resolve are circles. (This is why you make a baby's mobile in these shapes). It's also an evolutionary response to finding a teat. The first shape to be recognised is a face - my experience suggests this is at about three weeks.

Because we expect stones to be arranged in a circle - that's what we've (mainly) looked for. We know of, say, 1300 circles yet only 180 rows. (I know there are loads of these waiting to be described - I can feel it in my waters). Etc.
