Also, listen to John Cale's viola playing on VU's 'Heroin' or 'Black Angel's Death Song' and you've got the string equivalent of your sax nightmare, so it HAS been done. Personally, I prefer wild sax playing myself if it's on rock records, although I do have a problem with sax on rock records normally - it's just not really an instrument that screams RAAAAWWK! at you really, is it? I mean Hazel O'Connor's wipe-clean 'punk' 'music' sums up the worst of 'proper' sax playing to me, Bowie's 'Neukšln' sums up the best of 'bad' sax playing. Different strokes...
