Re: Best records of the year so far?
Aug 17, 2007, 22:01
I seem to think that I listen to lots of new stuff, but my money seems to go more on delights from the past...anyway, er...

The ones I like lots include:

*Artpop by Githead, Colin Newman's poppiest outing. Why not?
*Western Xterminator by RTX. Jennifer H kicks arse here, but not in a tuneless way like the previous RTX record!
*Woke on a Whaleheart by Bill Callahan. Sounds a bit like No Other by Gene Clark sometimes and has production from former Royal Trux man Neil Hagerty
*Part Two - The Endless Not by TG. Excellent stuff - the Psychic TV one was quite fun initially, but sounds a bit tired already. Not a huge fan of the Tadpoles...
*You Gotta Problem with Me by JC. It's almost poppy compared to the previous several outings - the one star review on amazon is hilarious, I hope my enthuasistic review made that person waste his money!
*You in Reverse by Built to Spill.
*Drums and Guns by Low
*the silver mt zion live album (when it comes out...probably my gig of the year so I'll mention that already)
*Hibernaculum by Earth
*the new New Pornographers (I know it's just indie power pop!)
*Candylion by Gruff Rhys
*All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone by Explosions in the Sky
*Station by Alan Vega
*Nostalgia by HTRK
*Year Zero by Nine Inch Nails (I know, it's like Roger Waters directing Ministry!)
*Jesus East by Black Cab
*We Were Dead Before the Ship Sank by Modest Mouse
*Saltbreakers by Laura Veirs. I quite liked the Shins too, despite their shiteness live
etc

The disappointments were more frequent: The Fall, The Stooges, Interpol, Jarvis Cocker (who could have made a good record, but hasn't ever), Von Sudenfed, Grinderman (c'mon, it's just Gallon Drunk!), Lou Reed's ambient cobblers etc
