Hob, your friend might also be interested in a little island off the coast of Kyushu called Yakushima. It's a couple of hours ferry from the southern most tip of Kyushu and is renowned for its cedar trees (you can actually smell cedar blowing down from the mountains as the ferry pulls into the harbour). Yakushima is a magical place; I was there back in the 60's and hiked into the mountains where the oldest cedars in the world are to be found. I think a few of the trees are between 5000 and 7000 years old and they are awesome! The great stump of one cedar was discovered last century by an American called Wilson and is now named after him (this particular cedar stump is so big that you can actually go inside where a little Shinto shrine has been set up to honour the spirit of the tree).
