Hob,
The cheapest, easiest to find and most up-to-date, most concise and thinnest book is Prehistory Of Japan, same title but different from the one that Littlestone mentions. Haven't got any of the books I have read with me right now but just remember it was written by a Japanese archaeologist.
Mind you, the best stuff (the books with the more mindblowing stuff like the Akita and Hokkaido stone circles, the rest of the standing stones and ancient mountain abodes of the gods) are sadly only written in Japanese.
Whatever, a trip to the countryside there and standing stone and wood is still the Queen.
