iTunes Bargain of the Week

Two pre-HIP / pre-original instrument fetishism recordings of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. One has the Münchener Bach-Orchester with Karl Richter conducting. The other features Karl Ristenpart & Saarländische Kammerorchestet. Sound is very decent. A total steal at £3.49. Ridiculous but there it is. You could probably rip it all from YouTube if you so desired but at that price why bother?

They have filled a great many listening hours the last week but

Rose Royce's In Full Bloom should be embraced as an unsung Norman Whitfield classic

The Pineapple Thief's Your Wilderness is a grower if still beset by being Prog without much by way of actual progressive elements. In terms of harmony, time signatures and compositional development it is fairly straight ahead stuff. If you liked Mansun's second album this makes a pretty good bookend.

and

I have enjoyed revisiting the first Automatic Man album, the first from Pat Thrall and Michael Shrieves' 1976 big budget Prog project and the only record with both of them in the line up. Sounds like early Journey with a bigger brain or Greenslade songs played by a chat show house band. Has some hollow, rent-a-muso moments and some of it sounds less than sincere but it is still better than 95% of the music flying a Prog flag of convenience in 2016.
