Re: Joy Division and the uncanny in music

Maybe time to tell my Joy Division campfire ghost story.

I used to chill out by going to the then derelict parts of London and photographing them. The old spice warehouses in Wapping and Shadwell by the river were my favourite. Inside one I found a hangman's noose coming down from the rafters, all nicely backlit and used almost a whole roll of film on it. A week or two later, I went to a Joy Division gig and indulged my other hobby of getting up to the stage and taking some good close ups of Ian Curtis. Processing the film, I found to my disappointment that I had mistakenly used the same, partially exposed roll of film with the noose. The pictures were all messy accidental double exposures. Some time later, I learned these had been Joy Division's last London concerts and Ian had died. My photos were like bad cheesy comments in retrospect and I could never show them.
