I remember reading in a Drudion how he wears a stab vest every time he's in the city. He obviously thinks about personal safety. I was at the Manchester Pogues gig last week, and when they played the last song, the crowd in the balcony were jumping up and down, and I could feel the balcony shake. Didn't like it one bit - I walked out! Afterwards I was explaining to someone, and was saying how once that thought of the balcony collapsing was in my mind, there's no way I could be a happy bunny. I felt silly after, as I know these balconies are built well and I felt a bit cowardly, (but will admit I felt a bit of a chill when I read about the ceiling collapse in the London Theatre). If I was playing at a publicised Belfast event, and I read there's bombs going off there...I dunno. I honestly don't know how I'd feel about that.

That was London though where I doubt he would attract much of any attention at all (at least not outside of an 80s nostalgia festival) let alone anything that would require body armor. I think Dave Clarkson has hit the nail on head elsewhere. Less Brian Jones meets Victor Jara than Brian Kilcine meets Victor Meldrew.

Perhaps he was told he couldn't perform in his military gear and that was a compromise he wouldn't make due to it being part of his whole trip, or couldn't make because his wardrobe is a little small?

Not the greatest of excuses to be honest. Lots of bigger bands have played there when there were actually troubled times, not just someone setting off what's just about more than a banger, but each to their own I suppose. But to be honest does anyone take all this revolutionary talk seriously? Listen to the lyrics of Revolutionary Man, he went to London, with a Burkha and stab vest and wondered why he got pulled up (probably for his own safety) and did a runner back home. Hardly someone who's going to be a part of the next uprising is it!

I remember broadcaster S.Maconie was visibly pissed off when Julian didn't turn up for an interview on The BBC Freak Zone - who recalls that?

More than disappointing. Like most people on this thread, I've seen Julian several times, Belfast Castle, Dublin, Empire, CQAF.. And I was really looking forward to seeing him again. But looks like he just can't Cope. Revolutionary my arse.
