All the excitement over the Beach Boy's Smile made me check out one the "buzz" box sets of the last couple of years: Amazon has Big Star's "Keep An Eye on the Sky" for $38, down $20 from its release. It's a great set, maps out the world of an American band building on the Beatles' melodic legacy, but with southern grit. Great harmonies, rhythmic guitar crunch, driving drumming, great songs, a real treat, even for those who never paid them much attention, but may be melodically hungry.

The Hunter - Mastodon Got to give thanks and praise to Mooncat for this one. Not at all my usual cuppa (far from it) but listening to them doing their thing with so much grace, power, inventiveness and sheer chutzpah makes it impossible not to really enjoy this record. The musical equivalent of watching the handball in the Olympics. Los Elementales - Arco Iris Shamefully I can't remember who recommended this band to me but the Art Ensemble of Chicago meets Wishbone Ash and "Caravanserai" era Santana sound they produce is just irresistable. No clue what they are singing about which is probably a good thing. Smile (2 disc version) - Beach Boys Nice enough. Not a huge leap in sound quality on my system. GIven I play it maybe twice a year I would have been pretty happy sticking with my 31 track bootleg and the Brian Wilson version. These all got a play or part play ... Cry Tough - Nils Lofgren Skin I'm In -Chairmen of the Board Castor et Pollux - Aradia Ensemble & Kevin Mallon Pilgrimage - Wishbone Ash Ride On Dreadlocks - Linvall Thompson Mahler 3 - Wiener Philharmoniker & Claudio Abbado Free Concert - Can A Scarcity of Miracles - A King Crimson ProjeKct The secret dub life of the flying lizards Junior Byles & Friends 129 Beat Street Ja-Man Special 1975-1978 Entering the Dragon - Keith Hudson Dub Gone 2 Crazy Never Turn Your Back on a Friend - Budgie Grin & Grin II - Grin White Holes Of Mole Hills - Ruth Theodore Collection - The Misfits Red Card - Streetwalkers The Magician's Birthday [Expanded De-Luxe Edition] - Uriah Heep Encore - Argent Circus- Argent Nexus - Argent

What a great week. New releases arrived from The Necks and the latest Morton Feldman from the Mode label's ongoing release schedule. Top that off with a Fall gig that even by their standards hit new heights of the surreal, shambolic and ecstatic and made for a rather fine week. The Necks - Mindset The Necks - Drive By The Necks - Sex Morton Feldman - Mode Edition 11,Orchestra The Fall - Y.F.O.C. The Fall - Imperial Wax Solvent. Hail! Mastodon - The Hunter. Fabulous with one of the best drummers in rawk! Crumbling Ghost - s/t. Love it Herbie Hancock - Future 2 Future. Lush (thanks KC) Glow(people?) - Sessions. Excellent space-jazz-rock from KC and the Spaceshine band. Great stuff. Dr Meaker - Lesson from the Speaker. Good stuff but not as good as they are live. Siouxsie - Mantaray. Like this a lot. Solus 3 - Corner of the World. Gorgeous! And becoming quite addictive! Nightwish - Dark Passion Play. Epic, gothular bombastitude! Astra - The Weirding Hey Colossus - RRR Fornost Arnor - Death of a Rose Dreamcatcher - Soul Freedom Sikth - Death of a Dead Day. Wish I'd seen 'em live. Black Country Communion - 2 Spellbound Dazzle - Unreal Fairytales. Bonkers Italian prog-metal that comes on like a hybrid of System of a Down and early Queen with prog-polka flourishes. Love it! Justice - + Chico Magnetic Band - 45's. Manic Street Preachers - Send Away The Tigers. One of their best I'd say. Have a nice week tune twangers! x

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - The Pacific Age Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - History Of Modern Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Navigation: The OMD B-Sides (Three releases that showcase the strengths and weaknesses of OMD. The Pacific Age is marred by some really overbearing mid-80s production, especially on the opening track 'Stay', but still has a few richly atmospheric moments for devotees. The next LP by the original 4 piece, last year's History Of Modern, I tend to listen to in my reworked 9-track version which moves 'Sister Marie Says' to track 2 and omits the dreadful comeback single 'If You Want It', the rather uninspired love-letter to Kraftwerk 'RFKW', and the completely un-OMD 'Sometimes' and 'Pulse', both of which are reasonably well done, but rather toe-curling. If you have this album, try resequencing it this way - it becomes much tighter, and closer in tone to Organisation or Architecture & Morality. The B-sides comp features some of their best tracks, such as 'Navigation' and 'The Avenue', but some drek towards the end (the surprisingly feeble A&M out-take 'Gravity Never Failed', and 90s b-sides 'Burning' and 'Sugar Tax'), redeeming itself at the last moment with the mellotron terrorism of 'The Angels Keep Turning (The Wheels Of The Universe)'. of Arrowe Hill - Hexadelica & The Speed Of Darkness of Arrowe Hill - Dulce Domum (Pleased to hear that Hexadelica, originally only released in a limited edition of 69 copies, is getting reissued as a download. Starts off by relocating Black Sabbath from Birmingham to Liverpool and concludes with a blood-curdling scream. Both LPs are the usual oAH mix of heaviosity and Edgar Allan Poetry). Hugh Cornwell & Robert Williams - Nosferatu (Hadn't played this for a while, but it seemed to suggest itself for another spin during Halloween week). Pet Shop Boys - Fundamental (Never thought this quite lived up to the promise of a full PSB LP produced by Trevor Horn, especially compared to their first collaboration 'Left To My Own Devices', but I am starting to appreciate it more. Majestic closing track 'Integral' is the undoubted classic here). The Beach Boys - The SMiLE Sessions (A 20-plus year obsession is finally given the closure I thought I'd experienced when I heard Brian unveil his reconstructed version at the Royal Festival Hall in 2004. But there is nothing to equal the spectral qualities of the original Beach Boys session tapes, and this massive 5CD box set is a real treasure trove. Haven't made it all the way through yet, but I expect I'll be spinning the double vinyl LP included as part of the package many times before the year is out). Flying Saucer Attack - Chorus (One of their best - a Peel session takes up the whole of side one, and side two features the gorgeous 'Beach Red Lullaby').
