My main issue with comments like this one is that Morrissey does a good cause a disservice by associating the desire for a more humane world with misanthropic fanaticism in the minds of the reader. Whether inadvertantly or not, it fuels the stupidity of kneejerkers think those who argue in favour of animal rights do so because they secretly despise the human race.

Misanthropic is exactly the right word. Racism would indicate a degree of discrimination which (in both senses) he seems to be incapable of. Why be precise when a sweeping generalisation will do very nicely and garner greater headlines?

I can't imagine that this arch solipsist and (by turns) narcissist and autophobe distinguishes between races in a Tyndall, Webster, Griffin kind of a way. There wouldn't be enough in it about him to retain his attention.

Anyway, someone please tell me why on earth we continue to care about what these old rock stars think when they are such a long way past the point where they truly entertained us let alone made new records with anything to say? If the music and the wit isn't there then no amount of grandstanding will save the day.

I increasingly think that almost everything written in the media about rock n roll needs to handled with the deepest scepticism because the bar is set so low. You've regularly got a situation where the barely literate are lavishing praise on the barely musical. HH Is a much more reliable barometer of what is really valuable.

As an audience we also need to collectively get past this My Rock Star Right & Wrong, "Stan" thing which seems to be encouraged by internet tribalism. People gather together to form a cyber version of the Roman Turtle in an attempt to ferry the object of their affections to critical safety. Art isn't football or ice hockey where defending the honour of every brutal, morally bankrupt, cheating bastard who happens to play for your team is par for the course. The fandom of rock n roll is what keeps the music in a cultural pergatory where the other Arts suck its teet for exposure and a wider audience but rarely reciprocates.

By the way, I just read this blog article which may be worth taking with just a pinch of salt (it probably wouldn't be concrete enough proof to justify column space in a newspaper), that claims that Magma's Christian Vander's a pretty hardcore Neo Nazi.

What's that quote about there being no innocent pleasures in life?

I couldn't get through the whole thing but one kind of monomaniac expressing admiration and identification with another kind of monomaniac is a pretty common trait among rock n rollers. It is certainly not the first time Vander has faced this kind of accusation.

I don't know if all this gossip makes Vander a Nazi or whether he is just one of those child-men who hasn't heard the word "no" often enough and acts out when facing the slightest resistence. Maybe one or both or neither. Maybe he enjoys / enjoyed a flirtation with the dark side of humanity. That's hardly uncommon in the arts either. Especially among rock musicians.

If the quotes are accurate it certainly sounds like Stella Vander has had to turn half a blind eye to some kind of craziness.

Magma's music remains glorious regardless. And perhaps some kind of internal battle in Vander's psyche between a humanist who loves Coltrane and a man who is attracted by totalitarianism and consipracy theories is what makes the music what it is. That's where we enter the old moral maze isn't it?

For a leftist it is hard to imagine that someone who plays the piano and drums with such sensitivity might actually be one of the bad guys. It is one of the great popular fallacies of socialism that its adherents hold all the cards in the arts and that the right has the monopoly on cruelty.

That said it is just as well that every amped-up rock n roller who has ever used a homophobic, misogynistic, racist or anti-semitic slur when haranguing a promoter, crew member or record company lacky isn't a card carrying Nazi otherwise the BNP wouldn't ever be any kind of fincancial trouble!

I think he's doing that thing we are ALL guilty of, where we condemn the actions of an instiution by citing the 'nationality' of said population as the cause.

However, I would be careful not to speak that way in public, tends to be a lazy off the cuff thing.

Indeed, and least of all to the sodding Guardian, paper of record to the chattering classes! If it was a calculated Outrage-A-Media-Liberal gambit then I have to say it worked. It earned more column inches and general chatter this weekend than any new record could have done, even at the fag end of media silly season.

I read the feature in the Guardian. It comes across as an unguarded aside that slipped out in conversation between two people, rather than a statement somebody was adamant on broadcasting. Simon Armitage is a well respected poet and Morrissey a renowned lyricist. Could there have been a little bit of professional rivalry involved when Armitage decided on ensuring he quoted that remark?

The Guardian's news report in the main section of the paper devotes most of its space to past reports of possible racist soundbites, as this instance seemed to need bolstering a bit, IMO. Morrissey wasn't making a racist 'rant' there. He was making an animal cruelty rant. I think most of us would catch ourselves slagging of a country that is indifferent to say, bullfighting for example. Or even fox hunting. - I'm sure somebody somewhere has slagged of 'the English' for that or a myriad of other crappy things we've done. Oops, I think I might have just accidentally done it, there.

Exactly. And as for it being a good healdine grabber, tbh, if I hadn't read these here pages today I wouldn't have known.

It's hardly been splattered all over the news media, unlike Wayne 'n' Colleen, fer example.

Actually I have seen a fair amount about it in print and on-line. It certainly got more space and airtime than the X-Factor punch up but less than the Rooney and Pakistan cricket fiascos. I look forward to reading his views on celebrity marriage and sporting morality in the Indian sub continent;-)

Ah I just listen to R4 in the morning really, and PM at 5, never (well very rarely)use the net as a source of info.

BTW the cricket thing is getting effing boring, verging on a vendetta.

Even filmed one guy who was duped into a meeting, and flatly refused any bribe. Still they had to give it a sinsiter angle.

Hope the NOTW journos are all jailed for procurement, the bastids.
