I read the feature in the Guardian. It comes across as an unguarded aside that slipped out in conversation between two people, rather than a statement somebody was adamant on broadcasting. Simon Armitage is a well respected poet and Morrissey a renowned lyricist. Could there have been a little bit of professional rivalry involved when Armitage decided on ensuring he quoted that remark?

The Guardian's news report in the main section of the paper devotes most of its space to past reports of possible racist soundbites, as this instance seemed to need bolstering a bit, IMO. Morrissey wasn't making a racist 'rant' there. He was making an animal cruelty rant. I think most of us would catch ourselves slagging of a country that is indifferent to say, bullfighting for example. Or even fox hunting. - I'm sure somebody somewhere has slagged of 'the English' for that or a myriad of other crappy things we've done. Oops, I think I might have just accidentally done it, there.

Yeah, in a funny way it's Simons fault that mozza said that the Chinese were a sub species. Sheesh
A statement that slipped out? Oh, that's ok then. As long as his racism was a comment between two people, that shouldn't have been reported it's not really racism is it?

It was an animal cruelty comment, but said in a racist way. He should have said people who treat animals this way are a ... Whatever. To say an entire race is a sub species, for whatever reason, is racism. Pure and simple.

I find the mozza apologists a bit bizarre. I was called a fucking idiot by binary elf for either reading his post wrong, or questioning mozza. What does he have to say to be branded a racist? I'm sure if he went out paki bashing you'd say it was in an ironic fashion

His backlist, good as it is, does not excuse him from this. We must judge him as severely as we would if it was, say, Phil Collins, Chris rea... Anyone

This place makes me a bit sick sometimes.

Kid. That wasn't entirely meant as a rant at you! The first bit was questioning your comments, but the rest is a general rant. Re read it, seemed like it was aimed at you. It aint

Are you never guilty of generalising in conversation? Never? I mean, I know it isn't a good thing to say, but haven't we all done that sometime?

I'm kind of ambivalent in this discussion, but your zealously righteous attitude is a bit full-on for me Pooley.

The Guardian is responsible for devoting most of it's Saturday editions page 3 to it.

It is what it is, a flippant remark in an interview.

I read the interview before I had even opened the main newspaper.

Another storm in a teacup I think.

Fair point I guess. My reaction to it initially was that it was a generalisation that I could have made in anger at the treatment of animals, but you're right, Mozzer does have "form"...

I'm not sure I would.

Here, by the way is a more level headed response from another newspaper. It also contains Morrissey's response: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/culture/neilmccormick/100046523/morrissey-racist-hes-just-stirring-the-storm-in-his-proper-english-builders-tea-cup/

Sometimes the government or authorities of a country are referred to simply by the name of that country. It usually comes across as implying all the individuals who live within that land. It's all very much a grey area of potentially dangerous generalisations, IMO.

I don't dislike all American people. Let's face it I've not met them all yet, so can't form any opinion on whether they're all like George W. Bush - However, I have slagged off America on numerous occasions, but was simply commenting on his government's policy of shafting certain less fortunate peoples in far off lands less equipped to look after themselves. Not Red Peony, Hand Of Dave and all the millions of other equally fab people over there.

In that previous post I deliberately made an example of dissing 'the English'. How many of us felt personally offended?

Agreed. But .... To say a country does something shitty is one thing. To say they do that shiity thing because they are a sub species is an entirely different thing.

Yes. Absolutely. There's no arguing with that.

I really want to believe that Morrissey chose his words wrongly whilst incensed by ignorant and vicious animal cruelty.

He is a bit infuriating in his ambiguity, even in his response to this uproar. I don't consider myself a Morrissey apologist, but at the same time don't believe he's a nazi. Well, not on this evidence.
