Just don't let on to Vybik Jon who told you what. Thankfully he's busy pummeling students.

Mingus, Mingus, Mingus!! As great a jazz genius as there ever was, and though his music breathes fire sometimes, it is always tasty & melodelicious. Among the highlights of his most fertile period (late 50's-early 60's) start with AH-UM, MINGUS DYNASTY, THE CLOWN, NEW TIJUANA MOODS.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk and Eric Dolphy are on the fence between "nice & cool" and "freaky & free" -- but THE INFLATED TEAR by the former or OUT TO LUNCH by the latter might do the trick. (You may develop a taste for these two while listening to Mingus, as both were in his band.)

Pharoah Sanders built on Coltrane's later (wilder) ideas, but at his best managed to capture that not-quite-so-out (still "nice") vibe of stuff like "A Love Supreme." Start with TAUHID or KARMA.

One I've just started getting into, and have very little music by (but it's great!) -- GABOR SZABO!! Funky gypsy guitar jazz.

As a general rule, anyone who played with Miles Davis is cool and their non-Miles work is also worth hearing: Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Cannonball Adderley, Gil Evans, etc. ad infinitum.

(I will not try to talk you into Archie Shepp, Sun Ra or Ornette Coleman, cuz that's not the sort of jazz you asked for! Though I would recommend FOUR FOR TRANE, INTERSTELLAR LOW-WAYS and CHANGE OF THE CENTURY as "nice" entry points for those if you're feeeling friiiisky.)

Want a refreshing change to the constant checking of the extended families of Miles, Impulse and Ornette which tends to be the norm round here? All great stuff mind but there's a wider jazz world out there too.

If you're looking for tuneful, melodic jazz of old with lots of swing then you can't go wrong with most albums featuring:
Pianists: Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Art Tatum, Horace Silver, Dave Brubeck, John Lewis.
Trumpet: Dizzy Gillespie, Thad Jones, Lee Morgan, 50s Miles, Chet Baker, Wynton Marsalis (not popular with jazz snobs..go easy, put a bag over the sleeve).
Sax: Coltrane (Giant Steps), Johnny Griffin, Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, Ronnie Scott.
Guitar: Joe Pass, Charlie Byrd, Martin Taylor.
Vibes: Milt Jackson, Terry Gibbs, Lionel Hampton.
Bass: Oscar Pettiford, Paul Chambers, Ray Brown, Mingus (selective), Charles Famborough. Bassist very important!
Drums: Art Blakey, Chico Hamilton, Shelly Manne, Martin Drew.

Lots of good 50s/60s blue note albums - take your pick. A good one with hard swing and soulful piano...

I'd suggest casting the net further and seeking out albums from musicians who were outside the 'family' of blue note....recommend stuff featuring Ray Brown, Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, Milt Jackson or drummer Martin Drew on it - they'll have you tapping your feet like a motherfucker. Oscar and Ray in action...

There's possibly a few albums around with most of those musicians playing together on them.
Good vocals...forget all the modern pretenders like Winehouse etc and go with the classics...two versions of same song..try Sarah Vaughan..

..or a fucked up Chet Baker who still sounded great shortly before popping his clogs...

Not a honk/shrill/'sound of a french traffic jam' or a sax player playing 'like scrambled eggs' in site with most of the above yet they've all pushed the direction of jazz too.

Nice.

More Miles that is a bit like Kind Of Blue

Also the Miles Davis CD's "Milestones" and "1958 Sessions" (originally from an LP called "Jazz Track") are very similar to "Kind of Blue" (recorded immediately before.)

For that matter the Cookin/Relaxin/Workin/Steamin series on Prestige from 1956 are all noteworthy (Cookin and Workin probably the best -- the other two more geared to cover tunes.)

Pretty much anything from 1954-1960 or so in fact!

Starting with "Seven Steps To Heaven" (1962), he's putting together the next famous band with Herbie and Ron and Tony (also good, but definitely more "mod.")

And Gil Evans "Out of the Cool" from about 1961 is also a gem!

(But beware his "Into the Hot" as that one has Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp, definitely not "nice & cool" music!)

I've seen them a couple of times in Exeter. Worth a punt. Although the 2nd time they were a bit on the short side.

I like Michel Petrucciani. Here he is with his So What!

I like his burst of mastery of the ivories at just before 3mins for 30 seconds or so.

Then to complement Michel, you cannot beat Jacques Loussier with his Play Bach stuff.
