Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage. Accessible and beautiful with just a hint of risk, but nothing to frighten the dogs or take the edge off your Martini. (As an informal rule go for the ones that reviewers describe as "lyrical jazz" and you will avoid spilling anything). Relaxing Jazz guitar that transforms into finger snappin' madness? Grant Green - Idle Moments. Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else. Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - No. 2. You will need to buy a smoking jacket to listen to this. Has got too much clapping on it though. I pretend they are applauding my dapper appearance.

I've yet to catch Acoustic Ladyland live, but can highly recommend Polar Bear live! Both are touring continually, btw.

I find Mingus' "Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus" his easiest listen (of what I've heard from him), and is definitely "nice", although I like his "The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" best.

IanB wrote: Coltrane - Crescent The great man on the cusp of change. One foot in the blues and modal Miles territory and the other reaching for A Love Supreme and beyond. For me it's the essential JC release. Seconded! One of my favourite Coltrane albums. I would also recommend "Giant Steps" and "Blue Train" as the perfect introduction to Trane. Another two favorites of mine that haven't been mentioned elsewhere in this thread are "Destination Out" by Jackie McLean and "Gravy Train" by Lou Donaldson. ...and if you are in a funkier mood, "The Sidewinder" by Lee Morgan and "A Night In Tunisia" by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers.

Carlos meant "Soul Station" (probably "sation" as in radio, not train, actually) :) "Soultrane" is a nice John Coltrane lp though... try these: Cal Tjader - Solar Heat Ike Quebec - Soul Samba Ike Quebec - Easy Living Freddie Hubbard - Ready for Freddie Freddie Hubbard - Open Sesame Tina Brooks - True Blue Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue Miles Davis - Blue Moods
