I disagree about "Last". I prefer it to "2nd", which sounds a little too Grateful Deady. I like "2nd"; it's just not as distinctive as their other work. In general, I wouldn't put Agitation Free at the top of my krautrock buy list. Gila's "Free Electric Sound" is in many people's krautrock top 10. For me, it's a little odd: it doesn't sound like other music I regard as archetypically kraut. I think the mention of early Pink Floyd is apt, as the album reminds me of the bright primary colors of early British psychedelia, but mixed with long jams and even some African-sounding percussion at the end. Witthüser & Westrupp is the best of the krautfolk camp. Get it.

If you want some real head crushing, bad tripped out psychedelic Kraut then Brainticket - Cottonwood Hill is a good bet.

The Silberbart album is great if you want a very heavy rock Guru Guru with a hint of Black Sabbath. Does anyone know if the German Oak album is available again?

Let's assume that you have already bought the major albums from all of the artists of my previous post. I would also recommend the following as must-haves: Klaus Schulze - Irrlicht Klaus Schulze - Cyborg Deuter - D Deuter - Aum Witthüser & Westrupp - Trips und Träume Amon Düül - Paradieswärts Düül Amon Düül - Psychedelic Underground Cosmic Jokers - Cosmic Jokers Sergius Golowin - Lord Krishna von Goloka Holger Czukay & Rolf Dammers - Canaxis Brainticket - Cottonwoodhill Dom - Edge of Time Dzyan - Electric Silence Dzyan - Time Machine Kollektiv - SWF Sessions Yatha Sidhra - A Meditation Mass Günter Schickert - Überfallig Annexus Quam - Osmose Sand - Ultrasonic Seraphim Gila - Gila 'Free Electric Sound' Floh de Cologne - Fließbandbaby's Beat Show one of the Kluster albums Anima - Stürmischer Himmel Anima - Anima Lots of people hate Anima, but you should hear at least the first one. If you're at all curious about the electronic avenues krautrock paved, you will want to hear the following: Ash Ra Tempel - Inventions for Electric Guitar Manuel Göttsching - E2-E4 Conrad Schnitzler - Blau A.R. & Machines - Echos aus Zeit der grünen Reise The following are sketchier, but you may want to try some of them. Limbus 4 - Mandalas Embryo - Steig Aus Embryo - Embryo's Rache Out of Focus - Out of Focus Eiliff - Eiliff Mythos - Mythos Lastly, here are some masterpieces that haven't seen legit reissue, but there are boots available of these: the first three Kraftwerk Tomorrow's Gift - Goodbye Future Between - And The Waters Opened If you come across boots of the first two Thirsty Moon (self-titled and "You'll Never Come Back"), get them, though they're not quite in the realm of masterpieces.

My own experience with "Tarot" is mixed. I really loved it the first time I heard it, but maybe the psychology of having paid $80 for it played a role. Every time I have listened to it since, I've liked it less. Now, there are just a few bits that I really like, and lots which I think miss their mark by a mile. It's been a while since I've listened to it, though, so maybe I should do so again.

One Can album that seems to be neglected by just about everybody is the awesome Can Delay 1968 album. Got issued circa '83. I was in a record shop that was playing it at that time and - until I asked - couldn't make my mind up whether it was a 60's album years ahead of it's time or a current album with a retro feel... DEFINTELY recommended. On a more recent front... Tarwater - silur Tarwater - animal, sun & atoms* The Notwist - neon golden * *in my top 3 LP's of the century along with the magnificent 'For Carnation' album...

You'll also want the first three Agitation Free albums. I'd start with "Malesch", their most experimental. "2nd" is more conventionally proggy and jam oriented. "Last" is a space trip with use of loops. The archival release "At the Cliffs of the River Rhine" is supposed to be almost as good as "Last", but I haven't heard it.

Word! I'm part of that minority that prefers Mooney to Suzuki. I don't think Delay is that hard to find though.

Just to expand on my suggestions - I'd plump for Neu! 75 as it's probably the best thing Neu! have done. It's a timeless classic that manages to combine two different musical approaches on one album successfully. The La Dusseldorf album Individuellos is also a fine example of some great tunes deserving a listen.
