I've gone overboard in buying cd's again. Got these through from amazon:
Can - Soon over babaluma. Pretty good. I personally like Karoli singing
Funkadelic - On the verge of getting it on. Pretty groovesome with plenty of guitar. Recommended by Nile Rogers (not personally) so I thought I'd check it out.
Neu - Neu. Had to see what all the fuss is about. Only heard it through a couple of times and like it so far, but need to hear it ore before I start waxing about it.

Got a few pieces from hmv's sale:
The Stooges - The stooges. Is this their debut album? Anyway, it is probably my find of the week. Produced by John Cale don't you know.
Echo and the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain. Not as good as crocodiles, but still pretty reasonable
The Smiths - The Smiths. Perhaps wasn't in the mood for it as I found it a bit dull. In a mean spirited mood I could find myself calling it crappy shoegazing lifeless indy crap, but hey I grew up loving them. Don't seem to like them as much now though.
DJ shadow - Private Press. Listening to it now. Does it for me.
Happy Mondays - Pills, thrills and bellyaches. a classic. had to get it on cd. having owned it on tape

Also listened to:
Duran Duran - Decade. Well there's no need to be like that! Got some great songs on it. My fav is 'view to a kill'
Psychedelic Furs - Psychedelic Furs. An intreguing mix of saxophone and punk sensibility. It works for me
Julian Cope - Fried. Enough said
Brian Eno - ambient 4. said how great this is enough times already
The Cure - 17 seconds. Plenty of good moments there.

is all

Er....Lawrence, I think you should know that Venom are/were about as seriously 'satanic' as a box of corn flakes.

Oh well.....It was a nice birthday pressie for me and I like screeeeaching and guitar wailing sometimes.
Is it 'real'? Are they taking the piss? How long's a piece of string and so on.
I feel it's beyond pastiche 'cos the songs are too good for that (IMHO). They respect their sources I think. Me, I get bits of Queen, KISS, AC/DC and Cheap Trick, Thin Lizzy in a tasty morsel of fun. It makes me jump around and not want to kill myself. Bargain really.

As usual, my fellow north easterner Joolio and myself share common musical ground, this week in the rotund shape of Michael Abrahams and, specifically for myself, the excellent second Blodwyn Pig album 'Getting To This' which inspired my first Unsung review in ages. I do heartily second Joolio's admiration for 'A Musical Evening' as well. Hear this great underrated Brit axehero;

Also played:

Pete Brown and Piblokto! 'A Meal You Can Shake Hands With In The Dark' - which brings 1970 straight into your living room with aplomb. A wonderful record;

Joni Mitchell 'Hejira' - where the great Canadian songstress sorta loses the plot a little for me - I much prefer the earlier, solo confessional stuff;

Radiohead 'Seven Television Comercials' - a DVD of seven well-weird but wonderful videos of 'OK Computer' and 'Bends' era 45's. Can anyone begin to explain that sick animation for 'Paranoid Android'?;

Mothers 'We're Only In It For The Money' - which I heard for the first time this week (£5 at Music Zone - way hey) and which has remained welded to my in car CD player ever since. Well strange;

Van Morrison 'Into The Music' - surely his most overtly tuneful collection ever. Lovely;

Caravan 'The Unauthorised Breakfast Item' - which is slowly growing on me beyond the terrific first three tracks. Still a little subdued for my tastes mind;

Richard Sinclair 'What In The World' - which blends Canterbury's most endearing vocalist against a mesmeric Dutch baroque organ. His version of Genesis' 'For Absent Friends' is possibly the loveliest thing I've heard this century;

Robert Palmer 'Sneaking Sally Through The Alley' - OK, in memoriam - but this guy really did make some pearlers when he set his mind to it. Forget all that late 80's sexist bollocks, back in '75 he was an R & B (in its old meaning) singer of the highest class;

Outlaws 'Outlaws' - for 'Green Grass & High Tides' - ten minutes of southern rock heaven with a riff straight from planet Org.

That was it. A good week methinks.

Take care y'all

So what you recommend as the best The Darkness songs? What should I hear that'll make or brake em for me?

Thanks,

Musical memories of the week
Sep 29, 2003, 07:05
New single by The Kills, "Fry My Mind To Bits" or something like that -- garage blues like The White Stripes only less affected and more, well, fried. (Plug - I'm going to see them next week.)

Yo La Tengo - heard a bit of their new album "Summer Sun" and it struck me as Stereolabish. Then got free pass to see their show this weekend and thought many of their tunes had definite NEU!/Kraftwerk/Can overtones. An old indie band that may be worth re-exploring.

Have just started giving Daeve Allen & Gong a serious listen -- decided I like them quite a bit. The Cammembert album seems the best so far.

Edgar Broughton Band - Wasa Wasa & Sing Brother. Why hasn't anybody reviewed this band for Unsung yet?

Some Caravan & Jefferson Airplane too. BTW, Spin magazine had a brief article on the first 4 JA LP's reissued on CD again -- they said "after Surrealistic Pillow it gets too weird for us" which only goes to show those fools ain't forward-looking. Fucking Dave Asshole Fucker Matthews on the cover this month, need I say more?

Finally heard a couple tracks from this "new" Kraftwerk "Tour de France" CD -- sounds interesting if not classic. Like I heard it on the radio and got excited "hey! this sounds like Kraftwerk!" but then when I found out it WAS Kraftwerk I was sorta disappointed.

In the car: Ice Cube mix tape alternating with a bunch of old corny songs I am supposed to learn for an alleged open mic gig at a bar that will probably never happen (Link Wray, Cissy Strut, Long Black Veil, Bacon Fat, Leaving Here, Shot Down, Drinkin' Wine Spoe-dee-o-dee, etc.)

Kate Bush –Lionheart
£5 bargain. Lovely to hear this without all the crackles of me old vinyl. Also watched the Whole Story video. Wow indeed. Kate is something else in these vids. Those eyes *sigh*

Captain Beefheart – Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)
Do that floppy boot stomp y’all. Another £5 bargain.

Velvet Underground – Velvet Underground
Someone else mentioned this. Another recent cheapo purchase, and very nice it is too.

Kiosk – Stratospheric (7” vinyl)
A return to the great rock 7” singles! Donald’s band rock out in no uncertain terms. The Squidling’s love this one. Get a copy if you can...

Timothy Leary – the Psychedelic Experience
Remastered and on CD for the first time – the ultimate trip guide. Leary’s voice is as mesmeric as ever.

Brian Eno and Harold Budd – the Pearl
Late night chillage. Gorgeous treated piano sounds.

Blue Oyster Cult – Spectres, Secret Treaties & Tyranny and Mutation
Spectres kicks off with another Squidling fave, Godzilla. Monumental riff, wonderfully stoopid lyric. As for the others, I can’t stop listening to the tracks Flaming Telepaths and Astronomy.

Randy California – Kaptain Kopter
I think Joolio mentioned this this week. One of Randy’s finest moments and truly unsung. I love the version of Lennon/McCartney’s Rain, with some splendid backwards guitar.

Spirit – Potatoland
I want to get permission to do the follow up album suggested at the end of this – The Revenge of the French Fries. Fantastic long-banned, almost lost Spirit album. Mind you, I used to own a bootleg tape of this before the official release, and if memory serves it was much more raw and less produced.

T.Rex – the Slider
Been hitting the vinyl this week. I love the cover of this one.

Bob Marley – Natty Dread
More vinyl. Much neglected Bob album (people always seem to go for the live version of No Woman No Cry etc). Much recommended.

I’m sure I’ve forgotten some other good stuff too – it’s been a good week music-wise.

Peace and Noise,
Squid

Rocking my pods this week:

Pink Floyd - Montreux Casino (especially the bit where there's such a terrible howl of feedback from the PA it prompts Dave Gilmour to dissolve into helpless laughter)
Peter and the Test Tube Babies - Loud Blaring Punk Rock (their equivalent of Skellington)
High on Fire - Surrounded by Thieves (every song sounds exactly the same but it's a good riff they've got there)
Kiss - Creatures of the Night (got the recently remastered version to replace the "Inoffensive 80's AOR Mix" CD I had previously - yay!)
Stone Roses - Turns Into Stone (hey heepee, suck my pee pee)
Sleep - Dopesmoker (new mix of the "song" off Jerusalem, now clocking in at 65 minutes long and all the better for it)
Nebula - Charged (got this in error but it's pretty cool so I'm not sending it back to exchange it, not as trippy as Let It Burn but mustn't grumble)
Lee Hazlewood - Something Special (surely he didn't mean to include that scat singing mouth sax on EVERY SINGLE TRACK?!?!)
Buckingham Nicks - s/t (not quite as silicon implant perfect as their Fleetwood Mac stuff and much better for it)

It's not your mind playing tricks, the 70's demos are available on a bootleg CD called "1984" among others and they are significantly different to the Line/Rhino version that came out in the 80's. Maybe you should seek it out and refresh your memory before you get cracking on the sequel ;)
