Morning all welcome to another Soundtrax – this weeks essential listening has been :- Gillan/Ian Gillan Band :- The Japanese album – 1st outing for the heavy rock version of Gillan – it rocks Mr Universe – more polished reworked European reworking of the Japanese album – peppered with bonus tracks Futureshock – hated this for years – love it now 8-) Toolbox – from 1991 – superb rock out from Gillan’s wilderness years from Purple (89 – 92) outclasses most of the Purple releases from 1984 onwards – should have been a huge hit – err wasn’t! Scarabus – The Ian Gillan Band try to rock out with limited success – still too much noodly jazz rock crap Live at the Budokan – live best of the IGB interesting historical document see comments re Scarabus though. Mick Abrahams Band – A Musical Evening With……….. brilliant 1st solo outing from the former Tull and Blodwyn Pig guitarist. The Black Keys – raw Free like (in places) blues based rock – don’t know much about this band but on the evidence of this disc well worth checking out. Kaptain Copter – excellent guitar workouts from Randy California Porcupine Tree – Recordings – outtakes from Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun sessions Porcupine Tree – Insignificance – outtakes from the Signify sessions Opeth – Damnation – mellow prog rock outing from Swedish thrash metal outfit it has Camel and Porcupine Tree fingerprints all over this album – the latter is hardly surprising as Tree mainman Steven Wilson handled production and some songwriting duties on this disc. Well worth a listen – I saw them play at Shepherds Bush on Thursday with two sets – firstly Damnation in its entirety then a second thrash metal set. The Temptations – Psychedelic Shack/All Directions – great soul/funk from 70-72 Mile Davis – On The Corner – noodly jazz rock fusion from 1972 – interesting it places but doesn’t do it for me. Feeder – Echo Park – good Brit rock Free – Heartbreaker – final outing from Paul Rogers and Co. and possibly the best And that’s it from me Over to you lot Joolio |

Righto then, well this week it's been: Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain Surprisingly good, given the sameyness of the (nevertheless likeable) bristol performance supporting Massive Attack Sonic Youth - nyc ghosts and flowers Never listened to em before, like this, not given it "proper" attention yet but have a hunch it's gonna grow on me QOTS - Songs For the Deaf Ok, good for rock, bit too rock for me at the moment Gatecrasher Experience - The Science Trancey/tech house, *LOUD* accompanying my dull wait for a BT engineer here at work this morning :-( And various bits of house & punk stuff

What did I listen to? Lemmy try to remember... The Comsat Angels: Sleep No More and Time Considered Con Demek: Dogmama LP -- when dogma becomes your mama! Joy Division: Unknown Pleasures Warzawa: self-titled -- weird Norweigan band from the early eighties that sound like the missing link between Joy Division and Can. Death In June: Brown Book -- Hi Doug!

I forgot -- I have this compilation of what's called "biker funk". The same kind of cross between acid rock/metal and R&B that Funkadelic was known for, but better in my opinion.

in the bag Farewell To Ireland Memories of Sligo Cd three of the Proper box set of Irish traditional music from 1920s and 1930s America. It might take a bit of getting into but it is as vital as anything from the period. Nice to hear this stage of another element of the future influences on rock and roll. This is the same era that the delta blues stuff was being recorded. Some of this may seem a tad corny, there's versions of Foggy Dew and Paddy Mcginty's Goat here for e.g. but I think the cliche only developed later. I think this is great, but it did take me a couple of listens to get really into it. Still, 4cds for around 25 euro or £12(cheaper if you're not paying for import)can't be sneezed at too loudly. In The Beginning There was Rhythm SoulJazz compi of Brit post-punk/New Wave dance stuff. I also just got the US equivalent in the shape of their 'New York Noise' which is just as good. I really think that Soul Jazz are a label of quality, a bunch of music fans releasing music for other music fans. The Golden Rule as applied to commerce? This compi is as funky as f***. I love the A Certain Ratio stuff which means I'll probably grab their 'Early' compi too. This Heat's 24 Track Loop truly is a thing of wonder, sounding like it could have been recorded a lot later. (could've been cut 20 odd years later with different technology and still not sound as good) Genesis Nursery Cryme Bought this to understand what I didn't like about prog. Found out I liked it, hope its not catching. Sounds like a post-Beatles pastoral band. I can stomach it muchly, I just wonder if this is because this was a new line-up and they hadn't hit a formula yet or if there is anything else by them worth checking out. Eddie Palmieri The Sun Of Latin Music New York based, Puerto Rican rooted pianist's early 70s progressive funk lp. Very danceable, at least once you get past the long ambient intro to Una Dia Bonita. I hear the Live at Sing Sing lp's pretty great too. Wish I'd known when I saw it. Tim Buckley This Dream Belongs to Me two sets of unreleased versions of tracks from '68 and '73 that turn up in very different form elsewhere. I've just asked Rhino Handmade if Works in Progress which overlaps the '68 stuff here is still available and been told no. Damn. (the new Television stuff is there though) The '68 stuff is material that was reworked into tracks on Happy Sad, tracks here became parts of the Room 109 suite. There's also a different take on Song to the Siren and a slower Buzzin Fly. the 73 stuff is better versions of the overcomercialised stuff on Sefronia (including the title track) and Look at The Fool (Tim hasn't got a cold here) Birthday Party Live 81-82 Raw, powerful. What else can i say. Funny that a bunch of public school boys could come out with something this alive innit? Membranes Wrong Place at the Wrong Time Compi of John Robb's Preston/Manchester based crew. They were described at the time as first lp era Meat Puppets play The Fall's Dragnet. I don't think they had the Puppet's virtuosity but otherwise that's reasonably close. Spike Milligan's tape Recorder is a thing of great joy. The cover of Voodoo Chile is so f***ed up its almost unrecognisable but all the greater for it. Stevo Np Tim Buckley Freeway Dixieland Rocketship Blues

Sounds in the pod have been Hallucinogen - Twisted Shpongle - Are you Shpongled Armand Scharbroeck Steals - Live. This was not what I expected. But I really enjoyed it. Very much of it's time but none the worse for that. SHotM - Mind of a Brother Maher Shahal Hash Baz - new split cd with the Curtains. This is one of the worst cd's I have ever heard. I normally like MSHB but this is dreadful. Tangerine Dream - Alpha Centauri...ok but not a patch on Zeit Ash Ra Tempel - Schwingungen / Seven Up. I love these discs, possibly some of the most beautiful music I know of. Spiritualized - Amazing Grace - ok, nothing special but quite an enjoyable listen Coil - Moon Music Trojan Records box sets - Dub + DJ's - really good value these - 3 cds for £7 in each box. Amon Duul - Phallus Dei - man this is a great album. Some of the bonus trax on the cd reissue aren't bad either. But the title track steals it. Rallizes - Blind Baby Sundial - Klunk/Sitar single

I've been getting into 'Garcia' also. The track Eep Hour is superb. I wonder if Bob Weir's "Ace" and Mickey Hart's "Rolling Thunder" are any good?

I didn't like Armand's "Live" as much as the "Dead" 3LP set. Some of the same songs, but mostly played in a dull, bluesy manner... "Streetwalker" on "Live" did have cool feedback though, and the overdubbed applause was a nice Warhol touch.
