Indeed, thank you for the debate. You know of course none of it's personal, just a clash of opinions. Though actually discussing it has pushed my opinion firmly in the opposite direction to yours, and I don't even agree with some of my statements I made above now. I'm not entirely sure where your description of this chap's behaviour fits into the equation either - you wouldn't advocate surgery on him to make your partner's job easier, surely? which is in effect what the parents of Ashley have done.
To say she doesn't have scope for anything even denies the benefits her parents say they get from her existence. To have no scope for anything sounds a bit like what certain eugenecists would have nonsensically said about people with all sorts of disabilities. If people in general think it's ok to do this to Ashley, where does it stop.
Anyway this whole thing keeps playing on my mind, and I suppose that's a good thing.
