A constructive thought, ED. Attaboygoffik : )

It's not so much the developing with something like this spencer, (although it'd be considerable and fairly costly) but the upkeep. OS changes, or GE changes could mean constant tweaking. For a project like his to really work and be useful (i'm sure goffik would agree) it requires not just the initial work but constant attention.

I'm a programmer, but not web stuff, so goffik would i'm sure know more about that subject.

Ta for the illuminating info re practicalities..I didn't know what you 'did' in real life...haven't got that sort of brain, Greek to me. (I married a programmer. Hi ho. We have 'strange but interesting' rugged individual offspring. Nice, though, thank f*ck...only one's a computer boffin (thank f*ck#2 : ; ) ) )

Well completely off the cuff, Happy Imbolic everyone. But could someone tell me whether it is today. tomorrow or the 4th February. The four seasonal festivities of the year, are presumably on the 1st day of their months. But then if they have been messing around with the calendars over time it doesn't really matter.......
The Coligny calender 'celtic' though roman lettering and found in a roman temple does not have the dates?, so presumably the Irish annals must be the right source.

Same to you Moss .
I can understand why the 4th is chosen .
The basis is midway between solstice and equinox 90 days .45 days after solstice =4th .

re imbolic at MotH, are there other irish tombs with similar orientation do you know?

Sorry ED , I'm sure it's dead obvious but MotH has me stumped .

I always celebrate it today Moss (Candlemas tomorrow). The one time of the year I become a true pagan again - I say time because it is that return of the light that happens all of a sudden at the end of January/beginning of February. Have been out 'snowdropping' - they're all coming out now. Probably a bit later up north.

Lol . Got it .

Listoghil is the obvious choice .

Given a general orientation 116 -126 for the date ,then there are about 10 Court tombs in De Valera's list of 173 (about 6%).
There are fewer Passage Graves with intact passages and whilst Frank Prendegrast PhD has the detail of them I haven't read it but have seen the orientations and not the names of the actual monuments .They are relatively evenly spread around the 360 degree horizon with a group of about 8 that would fit the Imbolc/Samhain bill .

Apart from a few notable exceptions, i'm beginning to think, *as far as monument orientations are concerned*, there isn't much to support the idea that neolithic people were concerned with what was going on in the sky, or what time of year it was!

Fair?

I wouldn't agree that they weren't concerned about what time of year it was - these 'pagan festivals' all pre-date Christianity otherwise we wouldn't have Christmas or Johnmas (as it is known on Orkney) i.e. midsummer. No written evidence that I'm not talking imbolics of course.
