I've spoken with people about this as one of our mentors at the site was partially sighted himself and used to advise on it. He said the colours are fine, more important is around text tagging so that voice readers can interprete it. Anyway that's off topic.

The web for me was part of a revolution of creativity, there is now a backlash against some of the web standards police (see Wired magazine online) as innovation seems to be falling due to too strict compliance with web standards. AJAX for example is a fantastic innovation but there would be similar concerns.

All I can say is that we check this constantly and want to avoid corporate blandness in our site - the black text on white page is fine in many situations but it's not for all.
