America's greatest ever *POP* band . . .

. . . is unquestionably The Monkees (even if Davy's a brit.)

Great songs & productions by the cream of the "brill building" crop, charismatic performers, but best of all I adore them for their will to fail in the face of overwhelming success. They didn't have to insist on producing their own records, insert subversive messages into their TV show, and make a tremendously psychedelic non-commercial motion picture . . . but they did.

The freakout climax from their final TV special -- the first couple minutes feature the quartet "proving they can actually play their instruments" (note Micky's weird drum set up -- he plays the kick with his left foot.) But then it turns into a crazy hippy freakout! Look for Budy Miles, Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll in the crowd (plus Rip Taylor!)
