Can of Worms

In response to various replies:

>dissing" can be fun...
>It's certainly less effort then being posistive!

Of course it is, but that's not what Unsung is for. It's for CHAMPIONING lost Rock'n'roll.

>If I dislike an album, and post a negative review, and this
>warns people off it, then I've saved them time, money and
>earache.

Of course, but that's not what Unsung is for. It's for CHAMPIONING lost Rock'n'roll.

>It was a >positive< review McG....read it again

I've only read a bit of it (every bone in my body tells me to stay away from ELP) but it seemed to me from the responses on the forum that it had strayed outside the parameters. Occasionally someone will come along and write something that steps outside the parameters but people hope it's OK because its funny or sentimental etc., which is all very nice and well but the more exceptions you make the harder it is to keep to the programme. Unsung is for CHAMPIONING lost Rock'n'roll (did I say that already?)

I do hope this doesn't freak too many people out - yes Unsung is desperately in need of a clean-up and I didn't mean to focus on the ELP review particularly. I also agree that Pet Shop Boys, Sude, DSOTM etc. are DEFINITELY NOT Unsung!

it was lost to me so i think it counts.who decides whats unsung?it was a well put review soon as you start ommiting cetain types of music your not valid.true it may not be what you like or what i like but so what .if somebody feels strongley enough about brothers in arms they should have the right to stick it up there.

Haha, well I hope you enjoy 'Trilogy' and I await your review of 'Brothers In Arms' with baited breath.

>it was a well put review

that wasn't in question

>soon as you start ommiting cetain types of music your not valid

I didn't think we were omitting certain *types* of music, but even if we were, it wouldn't make it invalid.

I'd agree that the reviews section badly needs some editting: surely there should be no way that the fucking Pet Shop Boys can be considered unsung.

Perhaps Unsung's "moral and financial considerations" message encourages negative reviewing? Dunno, just a thought. Some seem to think that being incredibly harshly critical of pretty much EVERYTHING they hear makes their reviews/forum posts more trustworthy. Personally speaking, being over-critical don't win my trust for a reviewer/poster, because it makes me realise that they'd slag anything just so that they could look as if they were more "in the know" than others. Whilst its clearly excellent that people don't completely suspend their critical faculties and think that it's all wonderful (that way lies reviews of the fucking Pet Shop Boys), I think it can sometimes swing to the other extreme.

Its none of my damn business anyway, and I'm sure that Head Heritage will do as Head Heritage sees fit. But there's my two penneth, for what it's worth.

Sung/Unsung?
Jul 10, 2004, 14:51
Here's something I've never quite understood: if it's a review of a rare and/or obscure album by a well-known band, is it unsung or not?

I ask this because one of Cope's Albums of the Month was a Black Sabbath bootleg. Certainly that would count as unsung to me, as well as being a real treat for Sabfans. In that spirit, and inspired by the recent Mott the Hoople thread, I was planning on posting a review of a Mott the Hoople bootleg. Now I'm not sure anymore if I should.

And finally, there are familiar artists/bands who might have an early album that is better than their more popular work, which even non-fans might like. Would that, too, have no place in the Record Reviews?

where else would you see a review of Richard LLoyd's 1st solo lp. Great powerpoppy lp that it is?
(tho I guess it did get reisued by Collector's Choice or someone last year)

I thought the ELP review was really quite good. It is nice to see what turns people off about music as well as what turns them on.
Personally I kinda likle the early stuff on that Manticore best of the bootlegs 2cd I've got. Might have lead me to buying the early box if i had the spare readies.

Might be nice to see some semi decent /serious destructions of sacred cows .
Not to give a license to gratuitousness though.

Holy~
While I agree with your decision to remove the obvious spam reviews and those that are negative for negativities sake(which I don't think Dog3000's ELP was,fwiw)..I hope you have a damn exact criteria for what is sung/unsung because..going by what you've said, that would mean removing the following Seth Man reviews
(as an example)

Anything by...

Black Sabbath
Led Zeppelin
Grateful Dead
Pink Floyd
Bowie
Deep Purple
The Rolling Stones
and on and on

Are you prepared to do that?..Do more harm than good,I think...

Also what is and isn't unsung in the Uk may or mayot be in the States or elsewhere in the world..seen?

I'd be careful with those pruning shears

holes said the following

Unsung is for CHAMPIONING lost Rock'n'roll (did I say that already?)

I do hope this doesn't freak too many people out - yes Unsung is desperately in need of a clean-up and I didn't mean to focus on the ELP review particularly. I also agree that Pet Shop Boys, Sude, DSOTM etc. are DEFINITELY NOT Unsung!

all these artists and all others too become entrenched into our minds for various reasons and most of that then distorts our perceptions and rememberances of the actual music that they make or made - some of it may very well be good and even great and it is that very music that might have been lost due to the very fact that the artist in question is now deemed to be sung

therefore such reviews are totally relevant to unsung in my book

a great example would be floyd - dark side of the moon now that to me is a great work - however not cause or what it is - it is just that i love a great many aspects of it and it drew together a vast amount of earlier explorations into one album - dont listen to it as dark side of the moon - listen to it with ur eyes wider

now is dark side of the moon unsung - of course not cause if you havnt found it yet then you havnt been listening

now the likes of the more soundtrack - that is completely unsung and is excellent indeed for further exploration

but i or u do not set the rules and as soon as u set rules then those rules will be broken

a hitchhikers guide to unsung now that would be good however few would read it just like few actually listen
