I haven't had a chance to listen to the Marillion in detail yet, especially as some of their records have taken year or more to bed in with me, so too early to have any kind of opinion. If Art Rock is the Labour Party of music genres then Prog are the hard left faction within it. Expelled in the late 70s and 80s only to return triumphant in the 2010s. So the unusually good reviews this record has had so far may mean that the country's critics are moving in a more Prog friendly direction or else the band have made a record with much of what makes them who they are diluted. After all these years it may also simply be their turn to have a day in the sun.

Meanwhile I have been enjoying these ....

Pleasure - Accept No Substitutes
Pleasure - Dust Yourself Off
PFM - Live In Roma
Pink Floyd - More
Freeez - Best Of
Jakko Jakszyk - Road To Balina
Real Thing - Children of the Ghetto (best of)

The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday
The Beatles - Please Please Me
The Beatles - Meet the Beatles
Stones - Goats Head Soup
Iamthemorning - Lighthouse
Commodores - Machine Gun
The Fierce and the Dead - Magnet
Matt Stevens - Lucid

Black Sabbath – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath it’s Sabbath, nuff said

Ted Nugent – Free For All with Meatloaf , post peak Nugent, the rot is setting in but boy he can spank that plank

Junkyard – S/T someone hoped that these would be the Skynyrd yin to GnRs Aerosmith yang or something but it was not to be, some nice tunes and guitars here, really enjoyed this, will now go back on the shelf for 28 months probably

Dio – Holy Diver \m/ in extremis, not in a faceflayingbatteryourskullIlikeskullsnstuff way, just completely \m/ and all the better for it. Like all the best HM singers Dio sings complete nonsense but you believe it 100%. I’ve certainly avoided talking to strangers since I listened to this

Red Guitars – Tales of the Expected 80’s shoulda been huge but fell out with each other, the debut was way better than Stone Roses and this pisses all over The Second Coming but only one band would fill a stadium if they reformed , stupid punters

Black tempest – Darkness Unfolding, Enfolding Light this rather good as I’m sure everyone here knows, if you don’t correct your ignorance forthwith

Crystal Jaqueline – Sun Arise new psychedelia [same as the old psychedelia] I suppose this isn’t cutting edge but unlike new prog which seems to revel in the tricksiness of it all this has some decent tunes bolted onto the tasteful guitar solos and appealing female vox, plus a Gordon Lightfoot cover [I’m banking on the Gordon Lightfoot renaissance in 2017 to show how ahead of the cutting edge I am, you read it hear first folks]

Judas Priest – Nostradamus, Stained Class, Killing Machine, Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin After Sin one of the inventors of proper metal as opposed to souped up mega amped blooze, suitably operatic vocals, twin guitars, widdlywiddly bits, big crunching riffs, double concept album, gay singer, dry ice, flying pigs, motorbikes on stage, songs about demonic vultures [yes all the boxes ticked carry on]

Yes – Going For The One, Keys to Ascension turbo nutter Yes , designed to impress Stadiums, Going For The One is immense and Keys to Ascension isn’t far behind. Not subtle maybe but still damn impressive and in parts absolutely lovely

Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine – Rampton lovely is not a label often applied to TOLRTD , not quite as vicious as Khanate, considerably slower than Cathedral, and home to the best Killdozer cover ever

Melting Hand – High Collider
Blown Out – New Cruiser
Haikai No Ku – Sick On My Journey Mike Vest slays on all of these, Melting Hand & Blown Out still vying for 2016 album topspot

The Scientists – A Place Called Bad aussie swamp rockers, falling between The Birthday Party & The Hoodoo Gurus, searing primal stuff, they certainly weren’t INXS nice to fill in the gaps in my vinyl collection, not sure what was in the water on that side of the globe in the 80s but it was 100% good

Cramps - Off the Bone, greatest compilation album ever, I think so

The Girl with All the Gifts saw this at the pictures last night, if you can possibly see it without any prior knowledge as I did you’re in for a treat, even if you do have some idea of what’s going on it’s still great, film of the year for me [so far, not that hard as I’m not a great cinema goer]

Did some research on artists I'd not heard of who are playing at the forthcoming TUSK festival in Gateshead and bought a few download albums from two artists:

GAS - Nah und Fern: A collection of 4 late 90s albums by GAS (Wolfgang Voigt - who is doing a Saturday lunchtime set with a visual artist at TUSK). Minimalist techno inspired by woods outside Cologne. I've just focused on the albums Zauberberg and Koenigsforst so far out of the 4. Loving it so far - ambient techno with Wagner samples. Perfect soundtrack to Anselm Kiefer (one of my favourite artists).

Skull Mask - a Mexican guitarist, like (early period) Six Organs... or Sir Richard Bishop. Desert, sun drenched acid acoustic guitar stuff. Mainly self-released by the looks of things. So far really enjoyed the shorter track albums Sahumerio and Sunburn - check out his bandcamp page. He's headlining on the Friday and involved in other fringe events on the Sat. Looking forward to it.

Otherwise:

Khunnt - Failures. Wasn't sure whether I should get this so went for D/L rather than LP but one of my favourites of the year. Repetitive and heavy and awesome!

Nick Cave - Skeleton Tree. Some really good material here as usual.

KETEV - I Know No Weekend. Written about this for weeks now. A highlight of the year so far.

Nudity - ...is God's Creation. Another one I wasn't sure about. Knew I'd like it but did I need it! Disc 1 in particular is great (Disc 2 less focused), and the track Moon Druids is one of my fave 3 minute rock songs ever. So yes it turns out it was essential!

Aria Rostami and Daniel Blomquist - Wandering Eye. Another long standing fave of the last few months - released on the excellent Glacial Movements label.

Screaming Trees - Uncle Anasthesia. An amazing thing. Blowing minds pales into comparison. Mark Lanegan is one of lives lost geniuses. Fact!

Chocolat – Rencontrer Looloo. One of those albums I knew I was going to really like from the first few seconds, something to do with its sound, swing and general air of a band entirely at ease with what they’re doing – which, given that these French Canadians flirt with psych, prog, metal and electronica and totally pull it off, is quite something. And just about every song is under three minutes. Check the guitar tone on this: https://chocolatmtl.bandcamp.com/track/les-pyramides

Emmet Elvin – Assault On The Tyranny Of Reason. Another goodie, from the keys man (though evidently also multi-instrumentalist) of Chrome Hoof, Guapo and Knifeworld. This is how you do modern prog: bold but not brash, clever but not wanky: https://emmettelvin.bandcamp.com/album/assault-on-the-tyranny-of-reason

Richard Pinhas / Tatsuya Yoshida / Masami Akita – Process And Reality. AKA the bloke from Heldon, the bloke from Ruins, and the bloke also known as Merzbow. Yes, it’s a great bloody noise, but the near constant, driving drumming from Yoshida makes it strangely accessible: https://cuneiformrecords.bandcamp.com/track/tvj-33-core-track

Gruff Rhys – Set Fire To The Stars. Never a big fan of SFA, but this is a perfectly pleasant film soundtrack. And the title track is damnably catchy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WqMvbIc8Ig

E-GONE – Advice For Hill Walkers

The Sea Nymphs – On The Dry Land

Jethro Tull – Stand Up. The new Steven Wilson remix. A bit of polish and separation here and there, but not as big an overall as A Passion Play or Aqualung. Haven’t listened to this in years and I have to confess it didn’t grab as much as it used to. Lots of nice songs, but for the most part, it lacks the wilfulness of their best stuff. Comes with a live disc recorded in Sweden just before SU’s release, which sounds great (complete with Anderson’s snidey and slightly uncomfortable stage banter), but is surprisingly still very R&B based.

Cabaret Voltaire – The Voice Of America. Thought I better give ‘em another go ;-) Liked this more, particularly the opening track, but my attention wandered as it progressed.

Listen With Father:

Hawklords – 25 Years On. After hearing their father bang on about this mysterious group Hawkwind pretty much such their birth, I thought it was time to give them a proper introduction… with the Hawklords album, naturally ;-0 Yep, I think ‘Psi Power’ is definitely becoming my favourite HW track. Explaining ‘Flying Doctor’ was fun.

Enjoying the Black Tempest a great deal, unfolding on the way [east to west] to a biscuit factory, enfolding on the way back [west to east] and inbetween I did my bit to keep Britain supplied with gingernuts, how's that for cosmic balance

Casual Nuns - another one to add to the list, suspect they'll have to wait as 11 Paranoias have an LP out on the 28th Oct, and I've just found out that Kandodo released a second lp in 2013 and have a new one out next week, I can't keep up
