Adams: Harmonium/Choruses from The Death Of Klinghoffer
Anyone interested in the middle east, censorship and American politics could do worse than look into the fury generated by Adams opera "The Death Of Klinghoffer" and its resulting suppression (overt and tacit). These choral excerpts are pretty great too if your tastes run that way.*

Nearly all these sounded great this week. The Crimson albums are just plain weird ...

I Roy- Musical Shark Attack
The The - Dusk & Infected
The Clash - Sandinista & This Is England & Super Black Market Clash
Joe Strummer - Streetcore
Spirit - Spirit of '76 & Future Games
Kronos Quartet - Early Music
Feist - Metals
Dexys - Searching For The Young Soul Rebels
The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Further Out
King Crimson - In The Wake Of Poseidon & Islands & Lizard
Bill Hicks - Shock and Awe & Salvation
Claudio Abbado, LSO, Martha Argerich - Ravel Piano Concerto #2
Clinton's War On Terror (Media Roots Podcast)
Moral Maze (BBC Podcast)
Hard Talk (BBC Podcast)

* The controversy itself is still running nearly 25 years after the first performance. With all that has happened over that period of time it is shaming that rock n roll has barely been able to raise an eyebrow in the mainstream political arena in the same period. Paid off and neutered by the rush to branding and the narcissism of social media. Lest we forget even Massive Attack changed their name to accommodate broadcasters' "difficulties" in saying their name on-air during the first gulf war.

Still, apparently it is much more important these days to be seen arguing furiously about the small differences between different kinds of pop music than really saying anything important about what is going on outside its own shrinking world. Carbon neutral touring and declaring "war" on Ticketmaster isn't really cutting it. Can Brian May really be our most outspoken political thinker in rock right now? Almost as bizarre as finding we have a Socialist Pope and opera that tells truth to power. How did that happen? Bah. Humbug.

Well said, Ian. I've asked here before who is currently producing music that you also think needs to be made - more so than ever - and didn't get a response. If anywhere I think it is in rap or 'agit-folk'...the barely intelligible machinegun-style delivery or the niche. There is, as far as I know, no modern equivalent of Out Demons Out, let alone anyone singing anything more lucid but at the same time easy to understand, while political, economic and overseas policies are rotten to the core. With regard to the latter, on RT yesterday it was stated that the arms market of the Gulf States would be worth $165bn+ over the next five years. With the US/UK economies dependent on arms sales - and dodgy finance (w h e n the next Big Crash happens the shit will REALLY hit the fan, the real reason for mass surveillance, the 'warontrrrrr' being the excuse for introducing the legal and electronic infrastructure of control and monitoring, imo) - what hope peace? I would be very happy if someone here said I was talking bollocks and pointed me in the right musical direction, but, as I've already said, last time I asked, nada. It is a strange paradox that while we are evermore socially connected via the internet, musical socio-political comment seems to be increasingly muted. A new Killing In The Name Of, anyone?

Honey - Weekend Millionaires. Grunge rockers hailing from Cornwall. Not bad really

PJ Harvey - Let England Shake. I need to get more Polly

Herbaliser - Something Wicked this way comes. A few really strong tracks including instrumentals interspersed with not very appealing rapping.

A guy Called Gerald - Essence.

Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain

Nick Cave - Abbatoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus. Another artist I need to hear more of. This is ok, but not as good as Push the Sky Away which is my only source of comparison so far.

Oh, and on my mp3 player:

live sets from islet and Beta Band somewhere or other. (end of road and house of blues i think)
