I think I assumed the same thing as you once and ventured a ways into Rankine's solo career. The whole of She Loves Me Not is one king hell of a shameless, grotty attempt at fashioning himself into a popstar. 'course he did end up producing the Cocteaus, so he semi-redeemed himself eventually.
