i could not get "another one bites the dust" out of my head in the last hour and checked the unsung forum to see a post about the best bass players of all time. I remember one day a co-worker telling me that he had just read this pretty exhaustive survey about the "best bass lines of all time" and Another One Bites the Dust was number one. We had a good laugh about that. I'm not a Queen fan myself, we just thought it was funny. Nevertheless it is perhaps one of the most memorable bass lines of all time. And so i address this to the forum. I'm not even gonna list any but i would think New Order would score well in this department.

Sucker for a melodic line and some subtle under-pinning ... Fingerprint File Love To Love You Baby Baby I Love You So / King Tubby Meets Rockers Up Town The Man In Me plus The Real Me or maybe Mr Big to represent the balls-out rock side of things

I suspect Holger's work with Can may get quite a few mentions in this thread, even though 'plonks' might be a better description (and no, that is not a criticism).

Holger's plonk sound is great, reminds me a bit of the Meters' bass player.

'Twist and Crawl' - The Beat. 'Poptones' - PiL. 'Vengeance' - New Model Army. 'Headphonics 1/0' - Ryoji Ikeda. 'Fahren' - Pole. Deliberately plucked the least obvious but really special bass lines from my head. I could probably list a good dozen dub related ones alone that could arguably be 'best'.

Too many to mention, but Psycho Killer by Talking Heads is always the first one that jumps to mind when I think about classic bass lines. EDIT: And while I'm on the subject of Talking Heads, the bass on Once In A Lifetime is pretty special too. In fact, Tina Weymouth is responsible for some truly classic bass lines.

Aerosmith - Intro and bits of "Sweet Emotion" Sisters of Mercy - "Lucretia My Reflection" for wide-screen goth power Intro to "Little Green Bag" (Resevoir Dogs choon) The Smiths - "Barbarism Begins at Home" Andy Rourke should've got a credit on that song! Lou Reed - "Walk on the Wild Side" Obvious maybe, but you know... Prob think of more later and change me mind later!
