Not sure i could pick a top 5 but i do have a number 1... Lee Sklar on Stratus - Billy Cobham. A bit of which Massive Attack sampled on Safe From Harm. So slinky it could go on forever.

Not read the whole list, some honorable mentions fer sure. As for my five P worth, dunno 'bout best, but in terms of being integral to the song.... Firehose - Brave Captain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51Uw-9lNl08 New Model Army - Christian Militia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TA30j2DKbVs Magazine - The Light Pours Out Of Me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0J1sOQdvudc Stranglers - Nice and Sleazy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjnFTpp79Ko Gang of Four - At Home He's A Tourist http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=650rLkgqpfw Bauhaus - Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores (plus IMO one of the most innovative guitar players in rock) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGKPST30lmQ Just about anything by Jah wobble

In a similar vein, Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. The bass really carries and drives the song. Both got the same 8 in a bar rhythm

Decided I couldn't restrict to five, so wasn't going to respond.. but, like you, Stratus absolutely my tops. It's a bassline impossible to argue with. Norman Watt- Roy on Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick was my other 'cert', but, beyond that....

That's what i thought when i clocked his mug for the first time yesterday ! Also read that he's played on over 2000 albums. Including Toto, James Taylor and Phil Collins. No wonder i knew next to nothing about him.

Cos it was sort of both the bass line and riff. And I guess "I feel Love" is a great bass line not on a bass too!

Not sure if anyone has mentioned "Billie Jean", but that (synth) bass line is probably one of the most recognizable and groove-inducing I know of.
