Talking of The Horrors influences.........Rough Trade have the album as their album of the month and have a wall dedicated to it and their influences with music by the likes of Neu!, Can, Psychedelic Furs, Sonic Youth, MBV, La Dusseldorf etc etc etc. All done with little write ups of each album.

Now, if I was a teenybopping Horror head shopping in Rough Trade I'd be overjoyed to see all that on show and would no doubt delve into some of the recommended albums. I love the way that can happen.

As the man who wrote the descriptions on that very wall, it's gratifying to know that someone has taken the time to read them! Thanks very much - and yes, the hope is that Horrors fans might be persuaded into buying some Krautrock, Berlin-era Bowie or Post Punk/New Wave on the back of it. Not that I ever stop trying to get people into that stuff anyway, you understand - I don't need an excuse!
Love the Horrors album myself, by the way.

It's sterling work you lot do over at Rough Trade. Love the shop, everyone's helpful, always makes a lunch hour pass by nicely. I may have spoken or bought stuff from your goodself in the past.

The wall displays and stickers on cd's have got me into some great stuff in the past and long may it continue! It's great to think that someone going in to buy the Horrors album could also come away with a La Dusseldorf album as well.

Well, thanks very much. I was previously sporting an Allen Ginsberg look, now more of a Howard Devoto thing going on (according to no less a man than Andrew Weatherall, a true gent), so it's quite possible I've served you in there before!

A-ha, the Ginsberg look! Yes, you recommended the Lindstrom album to me when it came out last year. Great album.

One thing I have to ask, does an ex member of Loop work in the shop? On your staff picks wall there was a pic of each of you from your younger days and one of them was a band shot of Loop with the long haired bearded dude circled in red.

(going a bit off track from the Horrors here)

Yep, the Lindstrom album made my top three last year (alongside Earth and Matmos) - the new Lindstrom & Prins Thomas album is also pretty good, though I think the single (which isn't on the album) is even better.

Neil the bassist from Loop used to work in the shop, and in the Covent garden shop before that. I think he's planning on going back to New Zealand at the moment. I used to have a photo of myself as a baby on the staff picks wall, now I'm just the mystery 'blank space'.

(that threads too long to reply to now as a quote)

So I was right on both accounts then. See, I know my Rough Trade staff.....not that I'm a stalker or anything!

I'm eagerly awaiting the Loop re-issue of A Gilded Eternity. The other two sounded great. Shame there's been no sleeve notes, but hey, you can't have it all.

I'll have to check the new Linstrom album at some point. I really want to hear his remix of a new Boredoms track that was mentioned online a little while back.

The Horrors live

went to see em last night in Birmingham, at what has to be the shittest venue in the country (Academy 2)

the albums really grown on me over the last few weeks but i did wonder how they'd pull it off live

well they did, and rather well too which surprised me greatly. very enjoyable gig with main set all made up of new album (from what i recall) and a quick fire encore of some older songs which rounded the night off on a high

good to see the 'kids' getting into it down the front too, even if it did make me feel like an old fart standing at the back

I was there too, thought it was pretty good and even bought a scarf in the most forward thinking piece of merchandising ever (6 months when all is forgotten you'll dig it out along with the albums...). Both support acts were brilliant so in all three decent bands for a tenner. One had a seance and brought back bauhaus (complete with cheekbones) and the other Alien sex fiend - not artic monkeys jamming with prodigy as some stupid children near me thought... And therein lies my only complaint. When I first saw the horrors they blew me away and the energy of the largely underage nme crowd was a major part of that , but last night the crowd at the front at least was full of trendy ignorant arrogant gobshites ( when did the kings of leon look become fashionable?). Witnessed a few bouts of fisticuffs which at a goth tinged event was odd. However, the new stuff sounded great and went down well, but it was the old songs at the end that held real menace...

Who were the Brum supports, then? I know we've got Factory Floor in Brighton tonight; apparently they sound like Joy Division (doesn't everyone?) I don't know if there's a second support... your night sounds like a real gothfest (great!), just with the wrong audience!

Finally bought the album today. Rather good, actually.

Doubt the earlier stuff would be up my alley though.

Factory Floor were the Bauhaus-a-likes, good drums, and bass played more like guitar. Had a guy playing keys and someone else on synths/fx/etc. Singer did a good job of hamming up the goth theatrics. Would've picked up a single or something but only had LPs. Didn't get what the other band were called but had a bjork esque singer playing guitar with anything but a pick, another tight drummer and a bloke doing loops/bass. Can see why people wouldn't like them but had a certain ASF/Suicide relentless quality to them and a spot of mystery too (might be adding that bit myself in a spot of romance). Will try to track some info down about them!

it was the Suicide sounding lot i saw, the one with the woman playing guitar with a bow (well thats what it looked like from what i could see anyway)

she had that trademark, face like a smacked arse 'i hate being here' look all through.

put me right off, as did them sounding like Suicide
