It was that one for me too. Bought with the money i received for my tenth birthday. Also got my Aunts copies of T.Rex and The Best of T.Rex ( Fly ) on that day too. I reckon she was pissed off with Bolan after the success of Ride a White Swan with the pre-teenies !

I still love all three of them too.

I was watching that 'Story Of Light Entertainment' documentary (narrated by Stephen Fry), repeated on BBC4, last night. I think the editor/researcher must have been a bit of an old Bolanite, as footage of T.REX featured in it several times. There were some awful bits from his kids' TV show 'MARC' and a cringey bit with Cilla Black. Despite the talking heads (who included Paul Morley) giving him some praise.

If only someone had advised and warned Bolan about when there was a risk that that sort of over-exposure was likely to cause damage - then perhaps those albums would be considered works of great importance to a lot more people. The trouble was, I suspect, Bolan's ego had already ensured that any sincere advisors had already been dispensed with. And the remaining sycophants just egged him on into guesting on more and more silly shows - rather than encouraging him into getting down to spending more time writing, recording and honing his talents.

'Electric Warrior' was indeed a triumph (as were the self titled T.REX album), but I wonder whether we would have had such timeless and cherished albums were it not for the steadying influence of Tony Visconti.

And a bit of equally amateurish Photoshoppery can make it return to a positive image. Hello, Shanshee - I know what you look like, finally!

Nah, don't agree with youn there, Kid.

Bolan did very little UK TV other than TOTP during his 71-73 peak. The Cilla thing was something of a one-off which he probably did because she was a mate of his (via Ringo by all accounts).

I actually like the Life's A Gas duet - it's a nice one-off as cheesy as some may find it. He looks and sounds great!

Better still, we got to hear Mad Donna, a Tanx LP track, for the first time. This was a big event for some of us!

As for the later appearances on various kids tv shows, well I guess needs must. Bolan's career had declined substantially by the time he finally gave up on trying to make it in the States, and returned home. And appearances on TOTP were no longer guaranteed. And actually, there were some good appearances on these shows - the live version of Dandy In The Underworld on Get It Together (IIRC) is one of my fave Bolan telly appearances ever. The warble (and the outfit for that matter) was almost Tyrannosaurus Rex. Fab stuff!!

As for the Marc series... well, regardless of whether it was any good, along with the Disc column it gave Bolan more exposure than he'd had in some time.

It might not have been vintage T.Rex, but I liked it myself. I certainly rushed home from school on a Wednesday. I think there were some decent re-workings of old faves and forthcoming ones, exposure for various punk/new wave acts (where else did you see Radio Stars on TV?!!), and that fab finale with Bowie.

As for Tony Visconti, no-one would doubt that he helped make Electric Warrior what it was, but I don't see a producer doing a good job as a slight to the artist in any way. That was Visconti's job, and he did very well. And not just on EW, either.

I'm currently reading his autobiography - there's much of interest and I haven't got to the bits I'm looking forward to yet! Nice foreword by Morrissey, too.

I dunno if the offer is still on, but Waterstones on-line were doing autographed copies for a decent price. I couldn't resist! ; )

Yeah, that Get It Together appearance doing 'Dandy In The Underworld is good. But the sight of Bolan with his little dance troupe doing 'I Love To Boogie' last night had me watching through my fingers, I'm afraid. It can probably be found on Youtube... but I don't want to go and find it, I'm afraid.

Here. Have the good stuff, instead. I prefer to remember him like this:

I think in many ways 'Mary Poppins' was Walt Disney's real masterpiece (tho I know it gets scolded by purists for detouring too far from the books). It's the perfect film in many ways, tho it's obviously a live-action cartoon fantasy of London. The music in it is fantastic. Julie Andrews completely owns that role- I hear Spielberg wants to do a version- I suppose he'll go back to the source- I sure hope he doesn't intend to redo the musical!
